Kathmandu

Kathmandu’s Durbar Square, Swayambhunath and Boudhanath are within the city and its immediate surroundings.

Lalitpur

Also called Patan, Lalitpur is known for Patan Durbar Square and generations of Newar craftwork.

Bhaktapur

Bhaktapur’s squares, temples and pottery workshops preserve much of a historic Newar city.

Pokhara

The capital of Gandaki Province stands beside Phewa Lake, with Machhapuchhre visible to the north on clear days.

Biratnagar

The capital of Koshi Province is one of Nepal’s main industrial cities.

Dharan

Dharan is home to the B.P. Koirala Institute of Health Sciences and is a gateway to the eastern hills.

Birgunj

Birgunj faces Raxaul in India and is a major gateway for Nepal’s overland trade.

Janakpur

The capital of Madhesh Province. Its Janaki Mandir is dedicated to Sita of the Ramayana.

Hetauda

The capital of Bagmati Province lies in an inner Tarai valley on routes towards Birgunj.

Bharatpur

Bharatpur stands beside the Narayani River, close to Chitwan National Park and the meeting of major highways.

Butwal

Butwal stands at the mouth of the Tinau River gorge, on the Siddhartha Highway towards Pokhara.

Siddharthanagar

Also known as Bhairahawa, the city is home to Gautam Buddha International Airport.

Lumbini

The birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha. The Maya Devi Temple stands within its sacred garden.

Ghorahi

Ghorahi is the headquarters of Dang district and one of the largest cities in Lumbini Province.

Nepalgunj

A trade and transport hub for western Nepal, with flights to remote mountain districts.

Birendranagar

The capital of Karnali Province and a gateway to the remote northwestern hills.

Dhangadhi

The largest city of Sudurpashchim Province and a commercial centre for the far west.

Bhimdatta

Formerly called Mahendranagar, the city lies near Shuklaphanta National Park and the Mahakali River.

Jumla

Jumla’s terraced fields include some of the highest rice paddies in the world.

Jomsom

Mustang’s headquarters lies between Dhaulagiri and Annapurna. Strong winds blow up the valley most afternoons.

Namche Bazaar

A Sherpa trading town at about 3,440 metres, where trekkers pause to acclimatise on the way to Everest.

Ilam

Ilam is known for the tea gardens that cover the hills around the town.

Gorkha

Gorkha Durbar recalls Prithvi Narayan Shah, who began Nepal’s unification here in the eighteenth century.

Simikot

Humla’s headquarters relies heavily on flights. Trekking routes lead north towards Tibet and Mount Kailash.
