What the map tells you about each one
The paragraph the game shows when you find each one. Reading them first is not cheating.
- Dakar
- Dakar replaced Saint-Louis as the capital of French West Africa in 1902. Its metropolitan area holds about four million people.
- Touba
- Touba was founded by Cheikh Amadou Bamba, the founder of the Mouride brotherhood, in 1887. It is run by the brotherhood and is Senegal’s second city.
- Thiès
- Thiès grew around the railway workshops, and a railway strike here in 1947 and 1948 inspired Ousmane Sembène’s novel God’s Bits of Wood.
- Rufisque
- Rufisque was one of the Four Communes whose people could vote for a deputy in the French parliament. It is now part of greater Dakar.
- Kaolack
- Kaolack grew as the port for the groundnut crop. Its central market is one of the largest in the country.
- Mbour
- Mbour has one of the busiest fishing beaches in Senegal, and the resort of Saly lies just north of it.
- Saint-Louis
- Saint-Louis was founded by the French in 1659 on an island in the river. Its colonial old town is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
- Ziguinchor
- Ziguinchor was a Portuguese trading post until France took it in 1888. Ferries link it to Dakar along the coast.
- Diourbel
- Amadou Bamba lived under French house arrest in Diourbel for many years, and a large mosque he began stands in the town.
- Louga
- Louga sits on the rail line to Saint-Louis. Many of its people have emigrated to Italy and Spain.
- Tambacounda
- Tambacounda is a crossroads on the road and railway to Mali and the gateway to Niokolo-Koba National Park.
- Kolda
- Kolda is the capital of the upper Casamance and a center of Fula culture.
- Richard-Toll
- Richard-Toll is named after a French gardener who laid out an experimental garden here in the 1820s. Today it is the center of Senegal’s sugar industry.
- Kaffrine
- Kaffrine became a regional capital in 2008. It is a market town for the groundnut and millet crops around it.
- Sédhiou
- Sédhiou was a French fort and trading post from 1837. It became the capital of its own region in 2008.
- Kédougou
- Kédougou sits on the Gambia River among the hills of the southeast. It is the base for visiting the Bassari and Bedik villages.
- Matam
- Matam faces Mauritania across the river. It lies in the Fouta, the historic heart of the Haalpulaar people.
- Fatick
- Fatick is in the old Serer kingdom of Sine. President Macky Sall was its mayor before he led the country.
- Podor
- Podor has an old French fort and a quay of merchant houses along the river. It lies close to the northernmost point of Senegal.
- Joal-Fadiouth
- Fadiouth is an island built on piled shells, joined to Joal by a wooden bridge. Léopold Sédar Senghor, the first president, was born in Joal.

How many cities are on the map?
20. Every one of them is on the map, and a run asks 8 of them. Pass a round and the places you found in it drop out of the pool, so the next run is what you have left.
What is a round?
A run of 8 questions, and 6 right passes it. 3 rounds cover the whole map, and the counter at the top of the Senegal page counts the ones behind you. Passing is what banks a round's finds: miss the mark and nothing is taken off the map, so every place that round asked about is still there to be asked again. A round is always the places you have not found yet, and when fewer than five are left it is topped up with a few you have found as review, so the last round is never one or two questions. Three quarters of it passes it.
Can I start the map over?
Yes. "Reset this map" under the counter puts all 20 back in the pool and sets the rounds to zero the moment you press it, so the whole map is there to be found again from nothing. It clears this map only; the other maps of Senegal keep their progress.
Do I need an account?
No. The game plays in the page, and a guest's progress is kept in their own browser. Signing in carries it between devices and earns XP for a run.
What happens when I get one wrong?
