What the map tells you about each one
The paragraph the game shows when you find each one. Reading them first is not cheating.
- Chișinău
- Moldova’s capital has broad boulevards, parks, museums and the country’s principal national institutions.
- Bălți
- Bălți is an important northern commercial and industrial centre with its own municipal territory.
- Tiraspol
- Tiraspol is the administrative centre of the Transnistrian de facto authorities within internationally recognised Moldova. The UK advises against travel to Transnistria.
- Bender
- Also known as Tighina, Bender is controlled by the Transnistrian de facto authorities despite lying west of the Dniester. Its fortress is a major historical landmark.
- Comrat
- Comrat is the administrative centre of autonomous Gagauzia. Gagauz, Romanian and Russian belong to the area’s multilingual life.
- Cahul
- Cahul is a southern regional centre. Farther south lie the Lower Prut wetlands and Moldova’s Danube frontage.
- Ungheni
- Ungheni faces Romania across the Prut. The railway crossing connects Moldova with the Iași region.
- Soroca
- Soroca is known for its round stone fortress beside the river. The wider district includes the Rudi geodetic point.
- Orhei
- Modern Orhei is a district centre. Orheiul Vechi’s cave monastery and archaeological landscape are at a different site to the southeast.
- Edineț
- Edineț is a northern town on inland routes between Bălți and the far northwest.
- Hîncești
- Hîncești is known for the Manuc Bey manor complex. The surrounding district extends west towards the Prut.
- Căușeni
- Căușeni is a district centre associated with its historic painted church. It lies inland from the lower Dniester.
- Dubăsari
- The city is under the Transnistrian de facto authorities. The constitutional Dubăsari District administration is based at Cocieri, so the city and district must be distinguished.
- Rîbnița
- Rîbnița is an industrial city under the Transnistrian de facto authorities. Rezina faces it across the river.
- Rîșcani
- This northern district town is distinct from Chișinău’s Rîșcani sector. Its wider district reaches the Prut reservoir near Costești.
- Drochia
- Drochia is a northern district centre in an agricultural landscape between Rîșcani and Florești.
- Strășeni
- Strășeni lies among the approaches to the Codri hills. Căpriana Monastery is elsewhere within the same district.
- Călărași
- Călărași is a central Moldovan town surrounded by wooded hills and vineyards. A different city of the same name lies in Romania.
- Ceadîr-Lunga
- Ceadîr-Lunga is one of Gagauzia’s principal towns, close to the Ukrainian border and the separate Taraclia district.
- Taraclia
- Taraclia is the centre of a separate southern district, with an important Bulgarian community. It is distinct from Gagauzia.

How many cities and towns are on the map?
20. Every one of them is on the map, and a run asks 8 of them. Pass a round and the places you found in it drop out of the pool, so the next run is what you have left.
What is a round?
A run of 8 questions, and 6 right passes it. 3 rounds cover the whole map, and the counter at the top of the Moldova page counts the ones behind you. Passing is what banks a round's finds: miss the mark and nothing is taken off the map, so every place that round asked about is still there to be asked again. A round is always the places you have not found yet, and when fewer than five are left it is topped up with a few you have found as review, so the last round is never one or two questions. Three quarters of it passes it.
Can I start the map over?
Yes. "Reset this map" under the counter puts all 20 back in the pool and sets the rounds to zero the moment you press it, so the whole map is there to be found again from nothing. It clears this map only; the other maps of Moldova keep their progress.
Do I need an account?
No. The game plays in the page, and a guest's progress is kept in their own browser. Signing in carries it between devices and earns XP for a run.
