Sarajevo

Sarajevo is the state capital. Ottoman bazaar streets, Habsburg buildings and later neighbourhoods extend along its mountain-framed valley.

Banja Luka

Banja Luka is a major city of Republika Srpska. The Vrbas and Kastel Fortress are useful landmarks in its central area.

Tuzla

Tuzla’s name and economy are associated with salt. The city is inland from the Sava plain and is a major northeastern urban centre.

Zenica

Zenica developed as an industrial and steelmaking centre. Its position on the Bosna links it with the central north–south corridor.

Mostar

Mostar is a major centre of Herzegovina. Its rebuilt Stari Most spans the Neretva, south of Konjic and north of Čapljina.

Brčko

Brčko town stands beside the Sava at the Croatian border. The town is the district’s urban centre, while the district covers a larger surrounding area.

Bihać

Bihać is an Una valley city in the northwestern Krajina. The river continues north towards its meeting with the Sava.

Prijedor

Prijedor lies on the Sana, south of Kozara. Its river valley connects the northwestern interior with the Una drainage system.

Doboj

Doboj occupies an important transport junction in the Bosna valley. Its hilltop fortress overlooks the town and surrounding routes.

Bijeljina

Bijeljina is a principal town of the Semberija plain. The Drina and Sava frame this lowland region near the Serbian border.

Trebinje

Trebinje follows the Trebišnjica through the southern karst landscape. Its old town and nearby monasteries connect it with the history of Herzegovina.

Travnik

Travnik was an Ottoman administrative centre. Its fortress and old neighbourhoods stand in the Lašva valley beneath the Vlašić mountain region.

Jajce

Jajce stands where the Pliva meets the Vrbas. A waterfall, a medieval fortress and the 1943 AVNOJ meeting make it a town with several historical layers.

Konjic

Konjic follows the Neretva at a mountain crossing. Its stone bridge and woodcarving tradition link river geography with local cultural heritage.

Goražde

Goražde is an eastern town on the Drina within the Federation. It illustrates why entity outlines cannot be reduced to simple east–west blocks.

Foča

Foča lies near the meeting of the Ćehotina and Drina. Sutjeska National Park and the mountains near Montenegro lie farther south.

Višegrad

Višegrad is associated with the Mehmed Paša Sokolović Bridge and Ivo Andrić’s novel The Bridge on the Drina. The bridge is a separate sight pin west of the town centre.

Livno

Livno sits beside Livanjsko Polje, a large karst field. Its landscape differs from both the northern river plain and the narrow Adriatic coast.

Stolac

Stolac lies on the Bregava. The Radimlja medieval tombstones stand northwest of the town, while the hilltop fortress overlooks the settlement.

Neum

Neum is Bosnia and Herzegovina’s coastal town. Its narrow stretch of Adriatic frontage separates two parts of Croatia’s mainland coast.
