What the map tells you about each one

The paragraph the game shows when you find each one. Reading them first is not cheating.

Bangkok

Bangkok is the national capital and a special administrative area. Its urban region extends beyond that boundary into neighbouring provinces.

Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai developed as the capital of Lanna. The old city’s moat and temples sit within a much larger modern urban area.

Chiang Rai

Chiang Rai is the main city of Thailand’s northernmost province. Mountain routes connect it with communities near Myanmar and Laos.

Mae Hong Son

Mae Hong Son town sits in a mountain valley. It shares its name with the much larger province along the Myanmar border.

Nan

Nan town stands on the Nan River, whose waters eventually join the Ping to form the Chao Phraya. Mountains surround the valley.

Lampang

Lampang lies in a northern river valley enclosed by mountains. Its position connects Chiang Mai country with routes towards the lower north.

Sukhothai

This marker shows the modern town of Sukhothai. The historic park and remains of the former capital lie farther west.

Phitsanulok

Phitsanulok is a lower-northern city on the Nan. Its river valley leads south towards Nakhon Sawan and the central plain.

Nakhon Sawan

The joining of the Ping and Nan creates the Chao Phraya near Nakhon Sawan. Follow that river south towards Ayutthaya and Bangkok.

Ayutthaya

Ayutthaya was an international trading capital before its destruction in 1767. The historic city and its monasteries are recognised by UNESCO.

Kanchanaburi

Kanchanaburi sits where the Khwae Noi and Khwae Yai meet. The wartime railway and bridge connect its landscape with Second World War history.

Nakhon Ratchasima

Nakhon Ratchasima is often called Korat. It is a major entry point to the northeast from the central plain.

Khon Kaen

Khon Kaen is an important northeastern city for education, services and transport. It lies inland on the Khorat Plateau.

Udon Thani

Udon Thani is an inland northeastern city. Roads lead north towards the Mekong crossing at Nong Khai and east towards Ban Chiang.

Nong Khai

Nong Khai stands on the Thai bank of the Mekong. The river crossing nearby connects Thailand with Laos.

Ubon Ratchathani

Ubon Ratchathani city lies along the Mun. Farther east within the province, the Mun joins the Mekong at the Laos border.

Hua Hin

Hua Hin is a coastal city in Prachuap Khiri Khan province. It faces the Gulf of Thailand rather than the Andaman Sea.

Surat Thani

Surat Thani city is on the mainland near the Gulf. The province also includes Ko Samui and Ko Pha-ngan offshore.

Phuket

Phuket city is an urban centre on the island of the same name. The island is also a province, separate from mainland Phang Nga.

Hat Yai

Hat Yai is a major commercial and transport city in Songkhla province. It is inland, southwest of the coastal city of Songkhla.
