What the map tells you about each one

The paragraph the game shows when you find each one. Reading them first is not cheating.

Khartoum: Khartoum is Sudan’s national capital. The city is distinct from the wider state of the same name.
Omdurman: Omdurman was the capital of the Mahdist state and has important commercial and cultural histories.
Khartoum North, Bahri: Bahri is a familiar name for Khartoum North, a separate city in the capital’s urban area.
Port Sudan: Port Sudan is a major seaport. Its position differs from Khartoum’s inland river setting.
Kassala: The Taka Mountains rise beside Kassala, near the seasonal Gash river.
Gedaref: Gedaref is an agricultural market city and the centre of its namesake state.
Wad Madani: Wad Madani is a major city in the Gezira agricultural region.
Sennar: Sennar’s name is associated with the Funj sultanate and the later irrigation dam.
Singa: Singa and Sennar are separate cities. Both belong to Sennar State.
Damazin: Damazin is a city of Blue Nile State near the Ethiopian border region.
Kosti: Kosti is an important river and transport city opposite Rabak.
Rabak: Rabak is a separate city from Kosti, across the White Nile corridor.
El Obeid: El Obeid has a long history as a market centre in the gum arabic region.
Kadugli: Kadugli is inland from the Nile, near the southern Kordofan uplands.
El Fula: El Fula is a state centre in West Kordofan. This pin makes no claim about current control or access.
El Fasher: El Fasher has a history connected with the Darfur sultanate. The city has been severely affected by war.
Nyala: Nyala is a major city and commercial centre in southwestern Sudan.
El Geneina: El Geneina lies close to the western border. Its communities have suffered severe violence and displacement.
Zalingei: Zalingei is a city in the western upland region of Central Darfur.
Ed Daein: Ed Daein is an important town in East Darfur and part of the region’s rail history.
Dongola: Modern Dongola is distinct from the medieval archaeological site of Old Dongola farther south.
Atbara: Atbara is associated with Sudan’s railway history as well as the river junction.
Karima: Karima is beside the Napatan heritage landscape. Modern Merowe lies across the Nile.
Wadi Halfa: Wadi Halfa lies beside the reservoir in the far north. Reservoir construction displaced older settlements.

How many cities are on the map?

24. Every one of them is on the map, and a run asks 8 of them. Pass a round and the places you found in it drop out of the pool, so the next run is what you have left.

What is a round?

A run of 8 questions, and 6 right passes it. 3 rounds cover the whole map, and the counter at the top of the Sudan page counts the ones behind you. Passing is what banks a round's finds: miss the mark and nothing is taken off the map, so every place that round asked about is still there to be asked again. A round is always the places you have not found yet, and when fewer than five are left it is topped up with a few you have found as review, so the last round is never one or two questions. Three quarters of it passes it.

Can I start the map over?

Yes. "Reset this map" under the counter puts all 24 back in the pool and sets the rounds to zero the moment you press it, so the whole map is there to be found again from nothing. It clears this map only; the other maps of Sudan keep their progress.

Do I need an account?

No. The game plays in the page, and a guest's progress is kept in their own browser. Signing in carries it between devices and earns XP for a run.

What happens when I get one wrong?
