What the map tells you about each one
The paragraph the game shows when you find each one. Reading them first is not cheating.
- Brussels
- Belgium’s capital hosts the federal institutions and major European Union institutions. The City of Brussels is one of nineteen municipalities in the Brussels-Capital Region.
- Antwerp
- Antwerp connects an inland city with a major North Sea port through the Scheldt estuary. Its historic centre includes the Cathedral of Our Lady.
- Ghent
- Ghent’s medieval trading wealth is visible in the Gravensteen and its waterfront buildings. Saint Bavo’s Cathedral holds the Ghent Altarpiece.
- Bruges
- Bruges preserves a historic centre of canals, brick buildings and public squares. Its belfry looks over the Markt, while Zeebrugge lies on the coast.
- Leuven
- Leuven is the provincial capital and a university city. Its Gothic town hall and university buildings anchor the historic centre.
- Mechelen
- Mechelen stands on the Dijle. Saint Rumbold’s tower rises above the centre, recalling the city’s religious and political importance.
- Hasselt
- Hasselt is the capital of Belgian Limburg. It lies west of Genk and the former coal-mining districts of the Kempen.
- Genk
- Genk grew through twentieth-century coal mining. Former mining sites now connect industrial heritage with cultural spaces and the surrounding landscapes.
- Liège
- Liège is a major city in eastern Wallonia. The Meuse valley connects it with Namur upstream and Maastricht in the Netherlands downstream.
- Namur
- Namur is the capital of Wallonia as well as its province. Its citadel overlooks the confluence of the Sambre and Meuse.
- Charleroi
- Charleroi developed around coal, steel and glass industries. The Sambre connects it with the Meuse at Namur.
- Mons
- Mons is Hainaut’s provincial capital. Its hilltop belfry and the Doudou festival connect the city with regional heritage.
- Tournai
- Tournai is an old city on the Scheldt. Its cathedral and belfry are separate components of UNESCO World Heritage properties.
- Ostend
- Ostend is a coastal city with a port and long seafront. It connects the seaside with inland Flanders by rail and canal.
- Ypres
- Ypres, also called Ieper, was heavily damaged in the First World War. Its reconstructed Cloth Hall and Menin Gate help explain the surrounding memorial landscape.
- Kortrijk
- Kortrijk stands on the Leie and has a long textile history. Its medieval towers mark an old river crossing.
- Wavre
- Wavre is the capital of Walloon Brabant and stands on the Dyle, called the Dijle farther north in Dutch-speaking areas.
- Dinant
- Dinant occupies a narrow strip between the Meuse and steep cliffs. Its citadel overlooks the town, which is associated with saxophone inventor Adolphe Sax.
- Arlon
- Arlon is the capital of Belgium’s Luxembourg province. Its position places it close to the borders with Luxembourg and France.
- Eupen
- Eupen is the seat of Belgium’s German-speaking Community. The surrounding territory remains within Liège province and the Walloon Region.

How many cities are on the map?
20. Every one of them is on the map, and a run asks 8 of them. Pass a round and the places you found in it drop out of the pool, so the next run is what you have left.
What is a round?
A run of 8 questions, and 6 right passes it. 3 rounds cover the whole map, and the counter at the top of the Belgium page counts the ones behind you. Passing is what banks a round's finds: miss the mark and nothing is taken off the map, so every place that round asked about is still there to be asked again. A round is always the places you have not found yet, and when fewer than five are left it is topped up with a few you have found as review, so the last round is never one or two questions. Three quarters of it passes it.
Can I start the map over?
Yes. "Reset this map" under the counter puts all 20 back in the pool and sets the rounds to zero the moment you press it, so the whole map is there to be found again from nothing. It clears this map only; the other maps of Belgium keep their progress.
Do I need an account?
No. The game plays in the page, and a guest's progress is kept in their own browser. Signing in carries it between devices and earns XP for a run.
What happens when I get one wrong?
The map names what you actually hit, then lights up the right answer in green and tells you something about the place. Missing one is how most of this map gets learned.
