Oslo

Norway’s capital grew around a medieval settlement and became the seat of national government. Its waterfront includes the Opera House and MUNCH museum.

Bergen

Bergen was an important trading port of the Hanseatic League. The wooden buildings of Bryggen are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Trondheim

Trondheim was historically called Nidaros. Its cathedral developed around the burial place of King Olav II, later Saint Olav.

Stavanger

Stavanger grew from fishing and canning into an important centre for Norway’s petroleum industry. Its old town preserves wooden houses.

Tromsø

Tromsø is an Arctic university city with a long history of polar exploration. Summer midnight sun and winter darkness shape life here.

Bodø

Bodø lies just north of the Arctic Circle. Nearby Saltstraumen is a narrow passage with powerful tidal currents.

Kristiansand

Kristiansand was founded in 1641 by Christian IV. Its planned grid of streets gave the central district the name Kvadraturen.

Ålesund

After a fire in 1904, much of Ålesund was rebuilt in Art Nouveau style. Its harbour connects the city with fishing and maritime industries.

Drammen

Drammen grew around the timber trade and its river port. The riverfront is now an important public space.

Fredrikstad

Fredrikstad’s fortified old town lies beside the Glomma. The city was founded in 1567 by Frederick II.

Skien

Skien is the birthplace of playwright Henrik Ibsen. The Telemark Canal begins at the city and connects a chain of inland lakes.

Tønsberg

Tønsberg has a long medieval history. Nearby Oseberg yielded a richly furnished Viking ship burial.

Hamar

Hamar stands beside Norway’s largest lake. The ruins of its medieval cathedral are protected beneath a glass enclosure.

Lillehammer

Lillehammer hosted the 1994 Winter Olympics. Maihaugen presents historic buildings from the Gudbrandsdal region.

Lillestrøm

Lillestrøm developed around railways and timber processing. It is an important transport junction in the capital region.

Narvik

Narvik’s railway links its ice-free port with the iron-ore mines around Kiruna in Sweden. The town was strategically important during the Second World War.

Alta

Alta’s prehistoric rock carvings are on the UNESCO World Heritage List. They record thousands of years of activity beside the changing shoreline.

Hammerfest

Hammerfest is an Arctic port with a fishing history and a role in the energy industry. A monument marks a northern point of the Struve Geodetic Arc.

Kirkenes

Kirkenes lies in the far northeast near both Russia and Finland. Its history includes mining and severe wartime destruction.

Røros

Røros developed around copper mining. The historic town and its surrounding cultural landscape form a UNESCO World Heritage property.
