Vienna

Vienna is Austria’s capital and largest city. It is also a state in its own right, enclosed by Lower Austria.

Graz

Graz is Austria’s second-largest city and the capital of Styria. Its historic centre and Schloss Eggenberg form a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Linz

Linz is the capital of Upper Austria. Steelmaking and contemporary cultural institutions, including Ars Electronica, shape its identity.

Salzburg

Salzburg is Mozart’s birthplace. Its historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site beneath the Hohensalzburg Fortress.

Innsbruck

Innsbruck is Tyrol’s capital in the Inn valley. It hosted the Winter Olympic Games in 1964 and 1976.

Klagenfurt

Klagenfurt is Carinthia’s capital. Its position near Wörthersee connects the city with the state’s lake district.

Villach

Villach stands on the Drava near routes to Italy and Slovenia. It is an important transport junction in southern Austria.

Wels

Wels is a city on the Traun in Upper Austria. Its Roman history and modern trade fairs connect different periods of urban life.

St Pölten

St Pölten became the capital of Lower Austria in 1986. The state’s government district sits alongside an older historic centre.

Dornbirn

Dornbirn is Vorarlberg’s largest city, although Bregenz is the state capital. Textiles played an important role in its industrial development.

Wiener Neustadt

Wiener Neustadt lies in the southern Vienna basin. It is associated with the Theresian Military Academy, founded in 1751.

Steyr

Steyr stands at the meeting of the Steyr and Enns rivers. Its historic centre reflects the wealth of earlier ironworking and trade.

Feldkirch

Feldkirch has a medieval centre below the Schattenburg castle. It sits near Austria’s borders with Liechtenstein and Switzerland.

Bregenz

Bregenz is Vorarlberg’s capital. Its festival is known for an open-air stage on Lake Constance.

Eisenstadt

Eisenstadt is Burgenland’s capital. The Esterházy Palace connects the city with Joseph Haydn’s long service to the Esterházy family.

Krems

Krems an der Donau stands at the eastern end of the Wachau. Vineyards and the river connect it with this UNESCO-listed cultural landscape.

Leoben

Leoben is associated with mining and metallurgy. Its university and industry reflect the history of ironworking in northern Styria.

Lienz

Lienz is the main town of East Tyrol. This separate part of Tyrol lies beyond North Tyrol, with Salzburg and Italy’s South Tyrol between them.

Hallstatt

Hallstatt is a lakeside village within the Hallstatt-Dachstein / Salzkammergut UNESCO cultural landscape. Salt mining has shaped the area for thousands of years.

Zell am See

Zell am See stands on the Zeller See in Salzburg state. It connects lake tourism with routes into the Hohe Tauern mountains.
