Islamabad

Islamabad is a planned capital within its own federal territory. Its landmarks include Faisal Mosque and the parliamentary buildings.

Karachi

Karachi is a major port and commercial city and the capital of Sindh. Mazar-e-Quaid commemorates Pakistan’s founding governor-general, Muhammad Ali Jinnah.

Lahore

Lahore is Punjab’s capital. Mughal monuments, gardens, literature and food streets are part of its long urban history.

Peshawar

Peshawar is the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Its old trading streets sit near routes leading towards the Khyber Pass.

Quetta

Quetta is Balochistan’s capital, set in a high valley. Its inland setting gives it a different climate and landscape from the Makran coast.

Faisalabad

Faisalabad is an important textile manufacturing centre. Roads radiate from the old clock tower at the heart of its historic market plan.

Multan

Multan is associated with Sufi shrines, trade and the Saraiki-speaking region. The tomb of Shah Rukn-e-Alam is one of its best-known monuments.

Rawalpindi

Rawalpindi belongs to Punjab, while neighbouring Islamabad is a separate federal territory. The two form a closely connected metropolitan area.

Hyderabad

This Hyderabad is in Pakistan’s Sindh province, distinct from the Indian city of the same name. It stands near the lower Indus.

Sukkur

Sukkur faces Rohri across the Indus. Its barrage distributes river water into irrigation canals serving extensive farmland.

Larkana

Larkana is a city in the upper Sindh plain. The archaeological site of Mohenjo-daro lies to its south.

Bahawalpur

Bahawalpur was the centre of a princely state. Its palaces and connections with the Cholistan Desert form a distinct part of southern Punjab’s heritage.

Sialkot

Sialkot is associated with export manufacturing, including sports goods and surgical instruments. It is also the birthplace of poet Muhammad Iqbal.

Abbottabad

Abbottabad lies in the Hazara region. Roads from the city lead towards higher northern valleys and the Karakoram Highway.

Mingora

Mingora is an important urban centre in Swat, close to Saidu Sharif. The valley contains Buddhist archaeological heritage as well as later settlements.

Chitral

Chitral sits in a mountain valley near the Hindu Kush. Khowar is an important local language, and nearby valleys have other distinct cultural traditions.

Gwadar

Gwadar is a coastal city in Balochistan with fishing communities and a deep-water port. The city occupies a distinctive peninsula on the Arabian Sea.

Gilgit

Gilgit is the administrative centre of Gilgit-Baltistan, a Pakistan-administered territory within disputed Kashmir. It connects several mountain valleys and road routes.

Skardu

Skardu is an important centre in Baltistan, within Pakistan-administered Gilgit-Baltistan. Routes lead towards Karakoram valleys and the Deosai plateau.

Muzaffarabad

Muzaffarabad is the administrative capital of Pakistan-administered Azad Jammu and Kashmir. It stands near the meeting of the Jhelum and Neelum rivers.
