What the map tells you about each one

The paragraph the game shows when you find each one. Reading them first is not cheating.

Yangon

Yangon is a major commercial centre and the home of Shwedagon Pagoda. It is distinct from Nay Pyi Taw, the national capital.

Nay Pyi Taw

The city and union territory share a name. The point identifies the capital area rather than the extent of the whole territory.

Mandalay

Mandalay was the last royal capital before British annexation. The city was severely affected by the March 2025 earthquake.

Myitkyina

Myitkyina lies south of the confluence that forms the Ayeyarwady. Its northern river setting differs from the lower delta around Yangon.

Bhamo

Bhamo is a river town near routes towards China. Its position links northern river transport with overland connections.

Hakha

Hakha occupies a mountain setting in Chin State. The point is a town location, not a marker for the whole Chin Hills.

Sagaing

Sagaing city and Sagaing Region share a name. The city lies near Mandalay, while the region extends far to the northwest.

Monywa

Monywa’s river setting links it with the Chindwin basin. It is northwest of Sagaing city rather than another district of Mandalay.

Lashio

Lashio belongs to the northern Shan uplands. It is geographically separate from Taunggyi in the south and Kengtung in the east.

Taunggyi

Taunggyi is a highland city east of the central dry zone. The city point is separate from the lake and its lakeside settlements.

Kengtung

Kengtung lies east of the Thanlwin valley. Its position helps distinguish eastern Shan from the Taunggyi and Lashio areas.

Loikaw

Loikaw is the principal city of Kayah State. The city and state belong to the eastern uplands rather than the Ayeyarwady delta.

Hpa-an

Hpa-an is associated with limestone hills and caves around the lower Thanlwin. Its city point is inland from the Gulf of Mottama.

Mawlamyine

Mawlamyine, formerly often written Moulmein, is a major city of Mon State. Its estuary setting connects river and coastal histories.

Sittwe

Sittwe faces the Bay of Bengal. It is southwest of the inland archaeological landscape at Mrauk U.

Mrauk U

Mrauk U was the capital of a Rakhine kingdom. The urban marker and the heritage map introduce the same area at different scales.

Magway

Magway city gives its name to the surrounding region. Farming and river connections are central to the wider dry-zone landscape.

Pakokku

Pakokku lies in Magway Region, while Bagan is in Mandalay Region. Nearby river towns can belong to different administrative areas.

Bago

Bago was associated with the Hanthawaddy kingdom. The city is distinct from the whole east-to-west region shown in the areas game.

Pyay

The ancient Pyu city of Sri Ksetra lies east of modern Pyay. The modern city and archaeological site have separate pins.

Pathein

Pathein is a major delta city on a distributary river. Its point lies inland from the Bay of Bengal coast.

Dawei

Dawei belongs to the long southern coastal region. It is north of Myeik, with Thailand on the other side of the inland hills.

Myeik

Myeik gives its name to the offshore archipelago. The city marker is on the mainland, separate from the representative island pin.

Bagan

The point identifies the historic Bagan area. Its many temples and settlements form a wider cultural landscape, not a single isolated building.
