What the map tells you about each one
The paragraph the game shows when you find each one. Reading them first is not cheating.
- East Jerusalem
- The pin is in the Old City of occupied East Jerusalem. Palestinians seek East Jerusalem as their capital; Jerusalem’s status remains unresolved.
- Ramallah
- Ramallah is a Palestinian administrative and cultural centre north of Jerusalem. Its role differs from the Palestinian claim to East Jerusalem as capital.
- Al-Bireh
- Al-Bireh and Ramallah are neighbouring cities. They share a governorate but have separate local histories and municipalities.
- Nablus
- Nablus is known for its old city, olive-oil soap and knafeh. It lies north of Ramallah and south of Jenin.
- Jenin
- Jenin is a city and governorate centre in the northern West Bank. The city and nearby refugee camp are distinct places with connected histories.
- Tulkarm
- Tulkarm lies near the western edge of the West Bank, between the coastal plain and inland hills.
- Qalqiliya
- Qalqiliya is close to the western edge of the West Bank. Barriers and crossing arrangements cannot be inferred from a simple city pin.
- Tubas
- Tubas is a governorate centre in the northeastern West Bank, connected with upland villages and Jordan Valley communities.
- Salfit
- Salfit is a hill town and governorate centre in an area associated with olives and rural livelihoods.
- Bethlehem
- Bethlehem is associated with Christian traditions of Jesus’s birth and contains the Church of the Nativity. It is also a living Palestinian city.
- Hebron
- Hebron, Al-Khalil in Arabic, is known for its old city, sacred sites, glass and ceramics. Access and governance within the city are complex.
- Jericho
- Jericho lies near springs and ancient settlement remains. The modern city, Tell es-Sultan and Hisham’s Palace are separate map locations.
- Gaza City
- Gaza City is a historic coastal centre. War has devastated communities and infrastructure; this reference pin does not establish current conditions.
- Deir al-Balah
- Deir al-Balah is a town and governorate centre between Gaza City and Khan Yunis. The name is associated with date palms.
- Khan Yunis
- Khan Yunis grew around a medieval caravanserai. Its city pin is distinct from the much larger governorate reference area.
- Rafah
- Rafah is associated with the border area adjoining Egypt. A city location does not indicate the status of the crossing or permission to travel.
- Jabalia
- Jabalia is in North Gaza Governorate. The town and nearby refugee camp have distinct origins, although the names are often discussed together.
- Beit Lahia
- Beit Lahia is a northern Gaza town historically associated with agriculture. Its location is a learning reference rather than a description of current land use.
- Beit Sahour
- Beit Sahour is a town east of Bethlehem associated with Christian pilgrimage traditions and local craft and community life.
- Beit Jala
- Beit Jala is a neighbouring town of Bethlehem, with its own churches, institutions and long local history.

How many cities and towns are on the map?
20. Every one of them is on the map, and a run asks 8 of them. Pass a round and the places you found in it drop out of the pool, so the next run is what you have left.
What is a round?
A run of 8 questions, and 6 right passes it. 3 rounds cover the whole map, and the counter at the top of the Palestine page counts the ones behind you. Passing is what banks a round's finds: miss the mark and nothing is taken off the map, so every place that round asked about is still there to be asked again. A round is always the places you have not found yet, and when fewer than five are left it is topped up with a few you have found as review, so the last round is never one or two questions. Three quarters of it passes it.
Can I start the map over?
Yes. "Reset this map" under the counter puts all 20 back in the pool and sets the rounds to zero the moment you press it, so the whole map is there to be found again from nothing. It clears this map only; the other maps of Palestine keep their progress.
Do I need an account?
No. The game plays in the page, and a guest's progress is kept in their own browser. Signing in carries it between devices and earns XP for a run.
What happens when I get one wrong?
