Banda Aceh

Banda Aceh stands near the northern coast of Sumatra. The Baiturrahman Grand Mosque is a landmark of the city.

Medan

Medan is a major northern Sumatran city, near the Strait of Malacca rather than the western Indian Ocean coast.

Padang

Padang connects the coast with the Minangkabau highlands and gives its name to widely known restaurant traditions.

Pekanbaru

Pekanbaru lies inland in Riau province. The Siak River connects the city with the eastern lowlands.

Palembang

Palembang’s riverfront is associated with the Ampera Bridge and the history of the Srivijaya region.

Bandar Lampung

Bandar Lampung lies near the Sunda Strait routes linking Sumatra with Java. It is the capital of Lampung.

Jakarta

Jakarta is a major commercial and governmental centre. Its metropolitan area extends beyond the provincial boundary.

Bandung

Bandung occupies a basin in West Java. Its inland position distinguishes it from the cities on Java’s northern coast.

Semarang

Semarang is Central Java’s provincial capital. Its coast and old trading quarters connect the city with maritime history.

Yogyakarta

Yogyakarta is a living royal and university city. Borobudur and Prambanan are separate sites in the wider region.

Surabaya

Surabaya is East Java’s provincial capital and a major port. A strait separates its coast from Madura.

Denpasar

Denpasar is Bali’s provincial capital. The city is distinct from the beach districts and temples elsewhere on the island.

Mataram

Mataram is the capital of West Nusa Tenggara. The province also includes Sumbawa farther east.

Kupang

Kupang is in Indonesian western Timor. Timor-Leste occupies the eastern part of the island and the Oecusse exclave.

Pontianak

Pontianak stands on the lower Kapuas system. The equator passes through the wider city area.

Palangka Raya

Palangka Raya is the capital of Central Kalimantan. It lies inland from the province’s Java Sea coast.

Banjarmasin

Banjarmasin is a river city near the Barito’s mouth. Banjarbaru, a separate city, is the provincial capital.

Samarinda

Samarinda is East Kalimantan’s provincial capital. It sits on the Mahakam, inland from the river’s delta.

Balikpapan

Balikpapan is a port and transport centre near the developing Nusantara area. It is a separate city from Samarinda.

Makassar

Makassar is a major eastern Indonesian port. Fort Rotterdam stands near its waterfront.

Manado

Manado faces a northern Sulawesi bay. The reefs of Bunaken lie offshore from the city.

Ambon

Ambon city sits beside a sheltered bay on its namesake island. Zoom in among Maluku’s smaller islands.

Sorong

Sorong is the main urban centre of Southwest Papua and a connection point for the Raja Ampat islands.

Jayapura
