Essential ยท Salt lake

Lake Assal

The hypersaline lake occupies Africaโ€™s lowest exposed depression. This pin marks a representative salt-shore location, while the waters map shows the lake itself.

Locate twelve city, island and landscape sights, from the capital and old ports to salt lakes, rift volcanoes and the Day Forest. Essential introduces starting points; Detour adds context. Pins mark learning locations rather than entrances or protected-area boundaries. Zoom in around Djibouti City and the islands. Select a pin to read about a place, then play the map and find them all.

Shared waters and a multilingual country

Arabic and French are official languages; Somali and Afar are widely spoken national languages. Worldly offers Somali, French and Arabic courses, with no Afar course yet. The Awash is mapped as Lake Abbeโ€™s Ethiopian feeder. Marine limits and lake shores are generalised learning geometry, separate from maritime claims or current water levels. Sight pins mark learning locations rather than entrances. UNESCO tentative listing is separate from World Heritage inscription.
