Djiboutian lakes, rivers and seas, found on the map

Find eight complete waters. Follow the Awash from Ethiopia’s highlands to shared Lake Abbe, distinguish Assal from Ghoubbet, then pan along the full Gulf of Aden, Bab el Mandeb and Red Sea. Waters continue beyond Djibouti’s borders.

8 to find, 8 a run.

One round, and 6 of 8 passes the whole map.

What the map tells you about each one

The paragraph the game shows when you find each one. Reading them first is not cheating.

Lakes2 on the map

Lake Abbe
The full lake crosses the border. It receives the Awash and has no outlet to the sea. Its shoreline changes with inflow, evaporation and water use.
Lake Assal
The whole hypersaline lake lies within Djibouti, about 155 metres below sea level. Salt flats and the changing shore are generalised; this is a separate basin from Lake Abbe.

Rivers1 on the map

Awash
The mainstem continues from the Ethiopian highlands west of Addis Ababa through the Rift Valley to Lake Abbe. It is included as the lake’s feeder, rather than as a river flowing through Djibouti.

Straits and belts1 on the map

Bab el Mandeb
The complete strait connects the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden. Its mapped waters cross national and maritime borders and exclude land and islands.

Seas and oceans4 on the map

Ghoubbet al-Kharab
The full inlet is shown to its mouth. It is connected to the sea, unlike the separate, closed Lake Assal basin nearby.
Gulf of Aden
Zoom out to follow the full gulf east to its opening into the Arabian Sea near Cape Guardafui. Bab el Mandeb and the inner Gulf of Tadjoura have separate targets.
Gulf of Tadjoura
Follow the gulf from the Ghoubbet opening east to the line between the capital’s peninsula and the Obock coast. Its mouth opens into the wider Gulf of Aden.
Red Sea
Zoom out to follow the whole sea towards the entrances to the separately named Gulfs of Suez and Aqaba. The target continues far beyond Djibouti.

How this one works

How many lakes, rivers and seas are on the map?

8. Every one of them is on the map, and a run asks 8 of them. Pass a round and the places you found in it drop out of the pool, so the next run is what you have left.

What is a round?

A run of 8 questions, and 6 right passes it. One round covers the whole map, and the counter at the top of the Djibouti page counts the ones behind you. Passing is what banks a round's finds: miss the mark and nothing is taken off the map, so every place that round asked about is still there to be asked again. A round is always the places you have not found yet, and when fewer than five are left it is topped up with a few you have found as review, so the last round is never one or two questions. Three quarters of it passes it.

Can I start the map over?

Yes. "Reset this map" under the counter puts all 8 back in the pool and sets the rounds to zero the moment you press it, so the whole map is there to be found again from nothing. It clears this map only; the other maps of Djibouti keep their progress.

Do I need an account?

No. The game plays in the page, and a guest's progress is kept in their own browser. Signing in carries it between devices and earns XP for a run.

What happens when I get one wrong?

The map names what you actually hit, then lights up the right answer in green and tells you something about the place. Missing one is how most of this map gets learned.
