What the map tells you about each one

The paragraph the game shows when you find each one. Reading them first is not cheating.

Karnali River
The Karnali cuts deep gorges through the western hills before reaching the plains. In India it becomes the Ghaghara, a tributary of the Ganges.
Mahakali River
The Mahakali forms most of Nepal’s western border. Downstream in India it is known as the Sharda.
Bheri River
The Bheri drains much of Karnali Province before meeting the Karnali, upstream of the point where that river leaves the hills.
West Rapti River
Called the West Rapti to distinguish it from the East Rapti in Chitwan, it drains the hills of Rolpa and Pyuthan.
Kali Gandaki River
Its gorge between Dhaulagiri and Annapurna is one of the deepest in the world. Downstream it joins the Trishuli to form the Narayani.
Marsyangdi River
The Annapurna Circuit follows the Marsyangdi valley up towards Manang. The river joins the Trishuli near Mugling.
Trishuli River
The Prithvi Highway between Kathmandu and Pokhara follows the Trishuli, whose rapids are popular for rafting.
Narayani River
The Narayani forms where the Kali Gandaki and Trishuli meet at Devghat. In India it is called the Gandak.
Bagmati River
The Pashupatinath temple stands on its banks in Kathmandu. The river is sacred to both Hindus and Buddhists.
Sun Koshi River
The Sun Koshi gathers the Tamakoshi, Dudh Koshi and other rivers before meeting the Arun and Tamor to form the Koshi.
Arun River
The Arun rises north of the Himalaya and cuts through the main range near Makalu.
Dudh Koshi River
Its name means “milk river”, after its pale glacial water. Trekkers to Everest cross it on high suspension bridges below Namche Bazaar.
Koshi River
Also called the Sapta Koshi, meaning “seven Koshis”, it carries more water than any other river in Nepal. The Koshi Tappu wetlands lie along its banks.
Rara Lake
Rara is Nepal’s largest lake, at nearly 3,000 metres within Rara National Park.
Shey Phoksundo Lake
Its deep turquoise water lies at about 3,600 metres inside Shey Phoksundo National Park.
Phewa Lake
Pokhara’s lakeside district faces Phewa, with the Tal Barahi temple on an island and Machhapuchhre reflected on calm days.
Begnas Lake
Begnas is the second-largest lake in the Pokhara Valley, surrounded by fish farms and paddy fields.
Tilicho Lake
At around 4,900 metres, Tilicho is one of the highest large lakes in the world, reached by a side trip from the Annapurna Circuit.
Kulekhani Reservoir
Also called Indra Sarovar, this dammed lake feeds one of Nepal’s few storage hydropower schemes.

How this one works

How many rivers and lakes are on the map?

19. Every one of them is on the map, and a run asks 8 of them. Pass a round and the places you found in it drop out of the pool, so the next run is what you have left.

What is a round?

A run of 8 questions, and 6 right passes it. 3 rounds cover the whole map, and the counter at the top of the Nepal page counts the ones behind you. Passing is what banks a round's finds: miss the mark and nothing is taken off the map, so every place that round asked about is still there to be asked again. A round is always the places you have not found yet, and when fewer than five are left it is topped up with a few you have found as review, so the last round is never one or two questions. Three quarters of it passes it.

Can I start the map over?

Yes. "Reset this map" under the counter puts all 19 back in the pool and sets the rounds to zero the moment you press it, so the whole map is there to be found again from nothing. It clears this map only; the other maps of Nepal keep their progress.

Do I need an account?

No. The game plays in the page, and a guest's progress is kept in their own browser. Signing in carries it between devices and earns XP for a run.

What happens when I get one wrong?

The map names what you actually hit, then lights up the right answer in green and tells you something about the place. Missing one is how most of this map gets learned.
