Portuguese rivers and the ocean, found on the map
Eight rivers and the ocean. Half the rivers rise in Spain and reach the sea here, and the other half never leave the country. One round covers the whole map.
9 to find, 9 a run.
One round, and 7 of 9 passes the whole map.

What the map tells you about each one
The paragraph the game shows when you find each one. Reading them first is not cheating.
- Tagus
- The Tagus, Tejo in Portuguese, runs about 1,000km from the mountains east of Madrid, and its estuary at Lisbon is one of the largest in Europe. It divides Portugal as much as any line on the map: the wetter, more crowded north above it and the plains of the Alentejo below.
- Douro
- The Douro rises in Spain as the Duero and forms the border for about 110km before crossing into Portugal. Its valley is terraced for the vines that make port, and until the railway and the dams came the wine went downstream to Porto in flat-bottomed rabelo boats through rapids.
- Guadiana
- The Guadiana marks the Spanish border twice, in the middle of its course and again for its last 50km to the sea at Vila Real de Santo António. Between the two stretches it runs through the Alentejo, where the Alqueva dam holds it back in a lake of about 250 square kilometers.
- Minho
- The Minho rises in Galicia and forms the border for its last 75km, one of the oldest stable frontiers in Europe. It gave its name to the green northwestern region on the Portuguese side, and to the vinho verde grown there.
- Mondego
- The Mondego is the longest river that runs its whole course inside Portugal, about 230km from the Serra da Estrela to the sea at Figueira da Foz. Coimbra’s poets and fado singers have been writing about it for as long as the university has stood above it.
- Zêzere
- The Zêzere rises high on the Serra da Estrela in a valley carved by an Ice Age glacier and flows south into the Tagus at Constância. The Castelo de Bode dam on its lower course holds the reservoir that supplies most of Lisbon’s drinking water.
- Sorraia
- The Sorraia drains the northern Alentejo into the Tagus estuary, through rice fields and cork oak. It gave its name to the Sorraia horse, a primitive, dun-colored breed found living wild along its banks in the 1920s.
- Sado
- The Sado is one of the few rivers in Europe that flows north for most of its length, to an estuary at Setúbal. The estuary is a nature reserve of salt pans and rice fields, and has a resident group of bottlenose dolphins.
- Atlantic Ocean
- Portugal has only one sea and has lived off it: the exclusive economic zone around the mainland and the two archipelagos is among the largest in Europe. The Portuguese still eat more fish per person than almost anyone in Europe, and salted cod from the far north Atlantic is a staple of its cooking.
How this one works
How many rivers and the ocean are on the map?
9. Every one of them is on the map, and a run asks 9 of them. Pass a round and the places you found in it drop out of the pool, so the next run is what you have left.
What is a round?
A run of 9 questions, and 7 right passes it. One round covers the whole map, and the counter at the top of the Portugal page counts the ones behind you. Passing is what banks a round's finds: miss the mark and nothing is taken off the map, so every place that round asked about is still there to be asked again. A round is always the places you have not found yet, and when fewer than five are left it is topped up with a few you have found as review, so the last round is never one or two questions. Three quarters of it passes it.
Can I start the map over?
Yes. "Reset this map" under the counter puts all 9 back in the pool and sets the rounds to zero the moment you press it, so the whole map is there to be found again from nothing. It clears this map only; the other maps of Portugal keep their progress.
Do I need an account?
No. The game plays in the page, and a guest's progress is kept in their own browser. Signing in carries it between devices and earns XP for a run.
What happens when I get one wrong?
The map names what you actually hit, then lights up the right answer in green and tells you something about the place. Missing one is how most of this map gets learned.
