What the map tells you about each one

The paragraph the game shows when you find each one. Reading them first is not cheating.

Murray River
The Murray is Australia’s longest river, at about 2,500 kilometers. It reaches the sea in South Australia, southeast of Adelaide.
Darling River
The Darling drains much of inland Queensland and New South Wales. Together, the Murray and Darling basins feed a large share of the country’s irrigated farms.
Cooper Creek
Cooper Creek is dry for long stretches and floods over wide channels after big rains. The explorers Burke and Wills died on it in 1861.
Burdekin River
The Burdekin carries one of the largest flood flows of any Australian river. Sugar cane grows on the delta at its mouth.
Swan River
The Swan was named for its black swans, the bird on Western Australia’s flag. To the Noongar people it is Derbarl Yerrigan.
Derwent River
The Derwent widens into a broad estuary at Hobart. Its lower reaches made the city a deep-water port for whalers in the 1800s.
Ord River
The Ord was dammed in the 1970s to irrigate farms around Kununurra, creating Lake Argyle upstream.
Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre
Its lowest point is about 15 meters below sea level, the lowest spot in Australia. It fills completely only a few times a century.
Lake Torrens
Lake Torrens is usually a dry crust of salt. It has rarely held water since records began.
Lake Gairdner
Lake Gairdner’s flat salt surface is hard enough to race on, and hosts land speed events.
Lake Argyle
Lake Argyle formed behind the Ord River Dam, finished in 1971. At full capacity it is one of the largest reservoirs in Australia.
Lake Pedder
Flooding the original Lake Pedder for hydroelectricity in 1972 started a protest movement that helped found one of the world’s first green parties.
Gulf of Carpentaria
The gulf is bordered by Queensland and the Northern Territory. Its morning glory clouds, long rolling bands, draw glider pilots each spring.
Great Australian Bight
The Bight is lined by the Nullarbor cliffs, among the longest unbroken sea cliffs in the world. Southern right whales calve along its shore.
Timor Sea
The Timor Sea separates Australia from Timor-Leste. A long dispute over its oil and gas fields was settled by a maritime border treaty in 2018.
Bass Strait
Bass Strait is known for rough seas. It was named after the surgeon George Bass, who sailed through it with Matthew Flinders in 1798.
Torres Strait
The Torres Strait is dotted with islands whose peoples are one of Australia’s two Indigenous groups, alongside Aboriginal peoples.
Shark Bay
Shark Bay is a World Heritage site with the world’s best-known stromatolites, rock-like mounds built by microbes much like the earliest life on Earth.

How this one works

How many waters are on the map?

18. Every one of them is on the map, and a run asks 8 of them. Pass a round and the places you found in it drop out of the pool, so the next run is what you have left.

What is a round?

A run of 8 questions, and 6 right passes it. 3 rounds cover the whole map, and the counter at the top of the Australia page counts the ones behind you. Passing is what banks a round's finds: miss the mark and nothing is taken off the map, so every place that round asked about is still there to be asked again. A round is always the places you have not found yet, and when fewer than five are left it is topped up with a few you have found as review, so the last round is never one or two questions. Three quarters of it passes it.

Can I start the map over?

Yes. "Reset this map" under the counter puts all 18 back in the pool and sets the rounds to zero the moment you press it, so the whole map is there to be found again from nothing. It clears this map only; the other maps of Australia keep their progress.

Do I need an account?

No. The game plays in the page, and a guest's progress is kept in their own browser. Signing in carries it between devices and earns XP for a run.

What happens when I get one wrong?

The map names what you actually hit, then lights up the right answer in green and tells you something about the place. Missing one is how most of this map gets learned.
