What the map tells you about each one
The paragraph the game shows when you find each one. Reading them first is not cheating.
Lakes8 on the map
- Lake Burera
- Burera, also spelled Bulera, lies higher and northeast of neighbouring Ruhondo. Zoom in to distinguish the twin lakes.
- Lake Ihema
- Ihema is part of the eastern lake and wetland landscape beside the Akagera. The mapped outline follows the lake rather than the national border.
- Lake Kivu
- The full shared lake is shown on both sides of the border, including its islands. Its outlet is the Rusizi at the southern end.
- Lake Muhazi
- The whole branching lake is shown. Its western outlet drains through the Nyabugogo to the Nyabarongo.
- Lake Ruhondo
- Ruhondo and Burera are separate lakes below the northern volcanoes. Their waters feed the Mukungwa and Nyabarongo system.
- Lake Rweru
- The full shallow shared lake extends well into Burundi. It belongs to the upper Akagera wetland system.
- Lake Tanganyika
- The whole lake is shared by Burundi, DR Congo, Tanzania and Zambia. It lies outside Rwanda and drains west through the Lukuga towards the Congo basin.
- Lake Victoria
- This whole shared lake lies in Uganda, Tanzania and Kenya, outside Rwanda. Its outlet at Jinja begins the Victoria Nile; zoom out and pan east to see the full lake.
Rivers4 on the map
- Akagera / Kagera
- Also called the Kagera. Follow the complete mapped course from the NyabarongoโAkanyaru confluence, past Lake Rweru and Rusumo Falls, into Tanzania and Uganda to Lake Victoria.
- Akanyaru
- The full mapped mainstem follows the RwandaโBurundi border and continues through wetlands to its Nyabarongo confluence, south of Kigali.
- Nyabarongo
- The mapped named mainstem begins at the MwogoโMbirurume confluence and ends where the Akanyaru joins. Downstream water continues as the Akagera; naming conventions differ around the upper reach.
- Rusizi / Ruzizi
- Also spelled Ruzizi. The full river continues along DR Congo, Rwanda and Burundi to its delta on Lake Tanganyika, well south of Rwanda.
How this one works
How many rivers and lakes are on the map?
12. Every one of them is on the map, and a run asks 6 of them. Pass a round and the places you found in it drop out of the pool, so the next run is what you have left.
What is a round?
A run of 6 questions, and 5 right passes it. 2 rounds cover the whole map, and the counter at the top of the Rwanda page counts the ones behind you. Passing is what banks a round's finds: miss the mark and nothing is taken off the map, so every place that round asked about is still there to be asked again. A round is always the places you have not found yet, and when fewer than five are left it is topped up with a few you have found as review, so the last round is never one or two questions. Three quarters of it passes it.
Can I start the map over?
Yes. "Reset this map" under the counter puts all 12 back in the pool and sets the rounds to zero the moment you press it, so the whole map is there to be found again from nothing. It clears this map only; the other maps of Rwanda keep their progress.
Do I need an account?
No. The game plays in the page, and a guest's progress is kept in their own browser. Signing in carries it between devices and earns XP for a run.
What happens when I get one wrong?
The map names what you actually hit, then lights up the right answer in green and tells you something about the place. Missing one is how most of this map gets learned.
