Explore Greece from northern mountains and plains to Athens, the Peloponnese and the islands. Learn its regions, cities and waters, discover the histories and everyday traditions behind them, then practise Modern Greek. The lessons introduce the standard language; regional varieties and other community languages are also part of the countryโs life.
Greece occupies the southern end of the Balkan Peninsula, with Albania, North Macedonia, Bulgaria and Tรผrkiye along its land borders. The Pindus mountains run through the western mainland, while the Thessalian plain opens to the east. Mount Olympus rises to about 2,917 metres near the boundary of Thessaly and Central Macedonia. The Peloponnese is connected to the rest of the mainland at the Isthmus of Corinth.
Start with all thirteen administrative regions, then place twenty-four selected cities and towns and find three rivers, two lakes and three seas. Zoom in around Athens and Piraeus and for smaller islands. Mount Athos has a separate autonomous status and is outside the regions quiz. Boundaries and waters: Natural Earth, public domain. Shared Prespa lakes are shown in full; rivers retain their Greek stretches. Sea areas are learning targets rather than maritime boundaries. City coordinates are curated.
The Parthenon crowns the rock above Athens. Go at opening time, then see the frieze in the Acropolis Museum below.
Start at the Acropolis, head out to the oracle at Delphi and the monasteries of Meteora, then take the ferry to the islands for Santorini and Crete. Essential is our shortlist for a first trip, and worth a detour goes further. Select a pin to read about a place, then play the map and find them all.
Hello, please, thank you, sorry: the ten openers everything else builds on.
When you have had your fill of Greece, the countries marked guide have a page like this one, and every other has maps of its own.
