Greek regions, found on the map
Learn all thirteen administrative regions, from Epirus and Macedonia to Crete and the Aegean islands. The autonomous monastic community of Mount Athos has a separate status and is outside this round. Zoom in to find smaller islands.
13 to find, 8 a run.
2 rounds, 6 of 8 to pass each. Pass one and its places are yours.

- Eastern Macedonia and Thrace
- Epirus
- Ionian Islands
- North Aegean
- Peloponnese

- Thessaly
- Western Greece

What the map tells you about each one
The paragraph the game shows when you find each one. Reading them first is not cheating.
- Eastern Macedonia and Thrace
- Komotini is the regional capital. The region includes the Evros borderlands and the island of Thasos.
- Central Macedonia
- Thessaloniki is the regional capital. Mount Athos at the end of the eastern Chalkidiki peninsula has a separate autonomous status.
- Western Macedonia
- Kozani is the regional capital. The region reaches the Prespa lakes near Albania and North Macedonia.
- Epirus
- Ioannina is the regional capital. Mountain villages, Vikos Gorge and the coast give the region varied landscapes.
- Thessaly
- Larissa is the regional capital. The region includes Meteora, the Pelion peninsula and the northern Sporades islands.
- Ionian Islands
- Corfu is the regional capital. The region also includes Lefkada, Kefalonia and Ithaca, but not every island in the Ionian Sea.
- Western Greece
- Patras is the regional capital. The region spans the northwestern Peloponnese and land north of the gulf, joined by the Rio–Antirrio Bridge.
- Central Greece
- Lamia is the regional capital. Delphi and the island of Euboea belong to this region.
- Attica
- Athens is the regional capital. Attica also includes islands in the Saronic Gulf and Kythera farther south.
- Peloponnese
- Tripoli is the regional capital. The administrative region does not include the whole peninsula: Patras and Olympia belong to Western Greece.
- North Aegean
- Mytilene on Lesbos is the regional capital. The island groups are separated by broad stretches of sea.
- South Aegean
- Ermoupoli on Syros is the regional capital. The region includes Santorini and Rhodes; it does not include Crete.
- Crete
- Heraklion is the regional capital. Crete is Greece’s largest island and includes the cities of Chania and Rethymno.
How this one works
How many regions are on the map?
13. Every one of them is on the map, and a run asks 8 of them. Pass a round and the places you found in it drop out of the pool, so the next run is what you have left.
What is a round?
A run of 8 questions, and 6 right passes it. 2 rounds cover the whole map, and the counter at the top of the Greece page counts the ones behind you. Passing is what banks a round's finds: miss the mark and nothing is taken off the map, so every place that round asked about is still there to be asked again. A round is always the places you have not found yet, and when fewer than five are left it is topped up with a few you have found as review, so the last round is never one or two questions. Three quarters of it passes it.
Can I start the map over?
Yes. "Reset this map" under the counter puts all 13 back in the pool and sets the rounds to zero the moment you press it, so the whole map is there to be found again from nothing. It clears this map only; the other maps of Greece keep their progress.
Do I need an account?
No. The game plays in the page, and a guest's progress is kept in their own browser. Signing in carries it between devices and earns XP for a run.
What happens when I get one wrong?
The map names what you actually hit, then lights up the right answer in green and tells you something about the place. Missing one is how most of this map gets learned.
