Azerbaijani economic regions, found on the map
Learn the fourteen economic regions, including separate Baku and the Nakhchivan exclave. These group districts and cities for regional planning; they are not fourteen provinces.
14 to find, 8 a run.
2 rounds, 6 of 8 to pass each. Pass one and its places are yours.
Every one on the map

What the map tells you about each one
The paragraph the game shows when you find each one. Reading them first is not cheating.
- Baku
- Baku forms its own economic region. Its municipal area extends well beyond the old city and is separate from Absheron–Khizi.
- Nakhchivan
- The Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic also forms an economic region. It borders Armenia, Iran and a short stretch of Türkiye.
- Absheron–Khizi
- This economic region groups Sumgayit with Absheron and Khizi districts. Baku is a separate economic region.
- Mountainous Shirvan
- Shamakhi, Ismayilli, Agsu and Gobustan districts form this economic region. Gobustan district is distinct from the coastal rock-art reserve near Baku.
- Ganja–Dashkasan
- Ganja and Naftalan are grouped with four neighbouring districts. The landscape rises from plains into the mountains around Lake Goygol.
- Karabakh
- This is the official economic-region framework, not the boundary of the former Nagorno-Karabakh autonomous area. Mines and access restrictions require current official checks.
- Gazakh–Tovuz
- Gazakh, Aghstafa, Tovuz, Shamkir and Gadabay form this region. It spans the Kura valley and foothills of the Lesser Caucasus.
- Guba–Khachmaz
- Quba and Qusar lie below high Caucasus valleys, while Khachmaz, Shabran and Siyazan connect the foothills with the coastal plain.
- Lankaran–Astara
- The humid southern coast and Talysh uplands support tea growing, rice cultivation and parts of the ancient Hyrcanian forest ecosystem.
- Central Aran
- Mingachevir’s reservoir and power infrastructure stand at the western end of this economic region. Fruit growing and irrigated farming shape its lowlands.
- Mil–Mughan
- Beylagan, Imishli, Saatli and Sabirabad form this region. Irrigation links farming in the Mil and Mughan plains with the Kura and Aras systems.
- Sheki–Zagatala
- This northern region includes Sheki’s trading and silk heritage, Zagatala’s foothills and Gabala. Mountain communities and fertile valleys give it varied landscapes.
- East Zangezur
- This official economic region groups five districts within Azerbaijan. Its name does not imply any claim to Armenian territory; mine risks and access restrictions remain relevant.
- Shirvan–Salyan
- The Kura reaches the Caspian near Neftchala. Shirvan National Park protects semi-desert habitats, including goitered gazelle, in this wider lowland landscape.
How this one works
How many economic regions are on the map?
14. Every one of them is on the map, and a run asks 8 of them. Pass a round and the places you found in it drop out of the pool, so the next run is what you have left.
What is a round?
A run of 8 questions, and 6 right passes it. 2 rounds cover the whole map, and the counter at the top of the Azerbaijan page counts the ones behind you. Passing is what banks a round's finds: miss the mark and nothing is taken off the map, so every place that round asked about is still there to be asked again. A round is always the places you have not found yet, and when fewer than five are left it is topped up with a few you have found as review, so the last round is never one or two questions. Three quarters of it passes it.
Can I start the map over?
Yes. "Reset this map" under the counter puts all 14 back in the pool and sets the rounds to zero the moment you press it, so the whole map is there to be found again from nothing. It clears this map only; the other maps of Azerbaijan keep their progress.
Do I need an account?
No. The game plays in the page, and a guest's progress is kept in their own browser. Signing in carries it between devices and earns XP for a run.
What happens when I get one wrong?
The map names what you actually hit, then lights up the right answer in green and tells you something about the place. Missing one is how most of this map gets learned.
