What the map tells you about each one

The paragraph the game shows when you find each one. Reading them first is not cheating.

Greater Accra
Greater Accra covers the least ground of the sixteen regions, yet the 2021 census found it had just overtaken Ashanti as the most populous. Accra and the port of Tema sit inside it.
Ashanti
Ashanti is the heartland of the Asante kingdom, whose king still holds court in Kumasi. It holds about five and a half million people, level with Greater Accra.
Central
The Central region holds the old European forts, including Cape Coast and Elmina castles. Cape Coast was the capital of the British Gold Coast until 1877.
Western
The Western region holds Ghana’s offshore oil fields and much of its gold, around Tarkwa. Sekondi-Takoradi is its capital.
Western North
Western North was split off the Western region in 2019. It is a cocoa and timber region, with Sefwi Wiawso as its capital.
Eastern
The Eastern region holds the Akosombo Dam at the foot of Lake Volta. Cocoa was first grown commercially in Ghana here, at Mampong, in the 1870s.
Volta
The Volta region is the home of most of Ghana’s Ewe people. It was part of German Togoland, and joined the Gold Coast after a 1956 plebiscite.
Oti
Oti was carved out of the northern Volta region in 2019 and named after the river that runs through it. Its capital is Dambai, on Lake Volta.
Ahafo
Ahafo was split off Brong Ahafo in 2019. Its capital is Goaso, and it holds one of the country’s large gold mines.
Bono
Bono takes its name from the Bono state, one of the earliest Akan kingdoms. Sunyani is its capital.
Bono East
Bono East holds Techiman, whose market is one of the largest in West Africa. The region sits where the forest gives way to savanna.
Northern
The Northern region was the largest in the country until 2019, when Savannah and North East were split off. It is the heart of the Dagbon kingdom.
Savannah
Savannah is the largest region by area and one of the least populated. Mole National Park, the country’s biggest wildlife reserve, is inside it.
North East
North East was split off the Northern region in 2019, with Nalerigu as its capital. It is the home of the Mamprusi kingdom.
Upper East
Upper East is known for the painted earth houses of Sirigu and the crocodile ponds of Paga. Bolgatanga is its capital.
Upper West
Upper West is one of the least densely populated regions. Wa, its capital, is known for its Sudano-Sahelian mud mosques.

How this one works

How many regions are on the map?

16. Every one of them is on the map, and a run asks 8 of them. Pass a round and the places you found in it drop out of the pool, so the next run is what you have left.

What is a round?

A run of 8 questions, and 6 right passes it. 2 rounds cover the whole map, and the counter at the top of the Ghana page counts the ones behind you. Passing is what banks a round's finds: miss the mark and nothing is taken off the map, so every place that round asked about is still there to be asked again. A round is always the places you have not found yet, and when fewer than five are left it is topped up with a few you have found as review, so the last round is never one or two questions. Three quarters of it passes it.

Can I start the map over?

Yes. "Reset this map" under the counter puts all 16 back in the pool and sets the rounds to zero the moment you press it, so the whole map is there to be found again from nothing. It clears this map only; the other maps of Ghana keep their progress.

Do I need an account?

No. The game plays in the page, and a guest's progress is kept in their own browser. Signing in carries it between devices and earns XP for a run.

What happens when I get one wrong?

The map names what you actually hit, then lights up the right answer in green and tells you something about the place. Missing one is how most of this map gets learned.
