What the map tells you about each one
The paragraph the game shows when you find each one. Reading them first is not cheating.
- Lower Silesia
- Wrocław is the regional capital. The Sudetes rise along the Czech border, while the Oder crosses the region’s lower ground.
- Kuyavia-Pomerania
- Bydgoszcz and Toruń share regional administrative functions. The Vistula passes through Toruń and continues north towards the Baltic.
- Lublin
- Lublin is the regional capital. The Bug marks stretches of the eastern frontier, and Zamość lies in the region’s southeast.
- Lubusz
- Gorzów Wielkopolski and Zielona Góra share administrative functions. The Warta joins the Oder at Kostrzyn on the region’s western edge.
- Łódź
- The region takes its name from its capital, a former textile centre. The Warta flows through western parts of the voivodeship.
- Lesser Poland
- Kraków is the regional capital. Zakopane stands below the Tatras, whose border summit of Rysy is Poland’s highest point.
- Masovia
- Warsaw is both Poland’s national capital and Masovia’s regional capital. The Vistula continues northwest towards Płock.
- Opole
- Opole is one of Poland’s smallest voivodeships. Its capital lies on the Oder, upstream of Wrocław.
- Subcarpathia
- Rzeszów is the regional capital. The Bieszczady Mountains occupy the southeast, and the San drains towards the Vistula.
- Podlaskie
- Białystok is the capital. The region includes Białowieża Forest near Belarus and the lake landscape around Suwałki.
- Pomerania
- Gdańsk is the capital. The Tricity faces the Gulf of Gdańsk, while the Vistula reaches the coast to the east of the city centre.
- Silesia
- Katowice is the capital. The modern voivodeship includes parts of historic Upper Silesia and Lesser Poland, so its boundaries are not those of a single historic region.
- Świętokrzyskie
- Kielce is the capital. The region is named after the Holy Cross Mountains, and Sandomierz stands on the Vistula near its southeastern edge.
- Warmia-Masuria
- Olsztyn is the capital. The region combines historic Warmia with Masuria and other areas, including the Iława Lake District around Jeziorak.
- Greater Poland
- Poznań is the capital. The region’s historic centres include Gniezno, associated with the early Polish kingdom.
- West Pomerania
- Szczecin is the capital. The Oder reaches the Szczecin Lagoon near the coast, while the voivodeship extends east along the Baltic.
How this one works
How many voivodeships are on the map?
16. Every one of them is on the map, and a run asks 8 of them. Pass a round and the places you found in it drop out of the pool, so the next run is what you have left.
What is a round?
A run of 8 questions, and 6 right passes it. 2 rounds cover the whole map, and the counter at the top of the Poland page counts the ones behind you. Passing is what banks a round's finds: miss the mark and nothing is taken off the map, so every place that round asked about is still there to be asked again. A round is always the places you have not found yet, and when fewer than five are left it is topped up with a few you have found as review, so the last round is never one or two questions. Three quarters of it passes it.
Can I start the map over?
Yes. "Reset this map" under the counter puts all 16 back in the pool and sets the rounds to zero the moment you press it, so the whole map is there to be found again from nothing. It clears this map only; the other maps of Poland keep their progress.
Do I need an account?
No. The game plays in the page, and a guest's progress is kept in their own browser. Signing in carries it between devices and earns XP for a run.
What happens when I get one wrong?
The map names what you actually hit, then lights up the right answer in green and tells you something about the place. Missing one is how most of this map gets learned.
