Moldovan districts and territories, found on the map
Learn thirty-two districts, the separate municipalities of Chișinău, Bălți and Bender, Gagauzia and the left-bank territorial units. These thirty-seven reference areas have different statuses; the boundaries do not show effective control. Zoom in for small municipalities and Gagauzia’s separate parts.
37 to find, 8 a run.
5 rounds, 6 of 8 to pass each. Pass one and its places are yours.

What the map tells you about each one
The paragraph the game shows when you find each one. Reading them first is not cheating.
- Anenii Noi
- Anenii Noi lies between the capital municipality and the Dniester. The Mimi wine estate at Bulboaca is in this district.
- Basarabeasca
- Basarabeasca is a small southern district adjoining Ukraine. Its namesake town developed as a railway junction.
- Briceni
- Briceni occupies the northwestern corner. Criva is near Moldova’s westernmost point, and the Prut marks the Romanian border.
- Cahul
- Cahul reaches down the Prut to Giurgiulești and Moldova’s short Danube frontage. Lake Beleu belongs to its southern wetland landscape.
- Cantemir
- Cantemir lies beside the Prut between Leova and Cahul. Farmland and the Tigheci wooded hills meet in this part of southern Moldova.
- Călărași
- Călărași belongs to the central Codri landscape. It is a district of wooded hills, villages and vineyards, separate from the Romanian city of the same name.
- Căușeni
- Căușeni lies south of Bender and east of Cimișlia. Reference administrative boundaries and effective control differ in some localities near the Dniester.
- Cimișlia
- Cimișlia occupies southern rolling farmland. Basarabeasca lies to the southeast, with Hîncești and Ialoveni farther north.
- Criuleni
- Criuleni lies between the capital region and the Dniester. Its district seat stands beside the river, south of Dubăsari.
- Dondușeni
- Dondușeni is a northern district of farming towns and villages. The Țaul park and manor landscape is one of its heritage places.
- Drochia
- Drochia lies in the northern agricultural belt between Rîșcani and Florești. The district’s name is associated with the great bustard, a steppe bird.
- Dubăsari District
- Dubăsari District must be distinguished from the city of Dubăsari, which is under the Transnistrian de facto authorities. The constitutional district administration is based in Cocieri; these reference polygons do not trace current control.
- Edineț
- Edineț lies in the northern uplands near the Prut. Its district seat is a regional town inland from the Romanian border.
- Fălești
- Fălești reaches from the western Prut border towards Bălți. Farming settlements connect the river plain with the northern interior.
- Florești
- Florești lies north of Telenești and west of the Dniester corridor. The Răut passes through its agricultural landscape.
- Glodeni
- Glodeni contains the Pădurea Domnească reserve along the Prut. River forest and the limestone landscape near Cobani contrast with surrounding farmland.
- Hîncești
- Hîncești extends from the central hills to the Romanian border. The restored Manuc Bey manor complex is in its namesake town.
- Ialoveni
- Ialoveni surrounds part of the capital’s southern approach. Mileștii Mici’s underground wine galleries are in this district.
- Leova
- Leova is a western district beside Romania. Its namesake town stands near the Prut, north of Cantemir.
- Nisporeni
- Nisporeni includes Bălănești Hill, Moldova’s highest point at about 430 metres. The district combines central uplands with the Prut border.
- Ocnița
- Ocnița reaches Moldova’s northernmost area near Naslavcea. The Dniester enters the country’s northern landscape here.
- Orhei
- Orhei contains the Orheiul Vechi cultural landscape around the Răut. The modern city of Orhei is separate from the archaeological site at Butuceni and Trebujeni.
- Rezina
- Rezina faces Rîbnița across the Dniester. Saharna and Țipova monasteries belong to the river-cliff landscape in this district.
- Rîșcani
- Rîșcani reaches the Prut near the Costești–Stânca reservoir. The town should not be confused with the Rîșcani sector of Chișinău.
- Sîngerei
- Sîngerei lies between Bălți and the central districts. Agricultural land and villages extend towards the Răut basin.
- Soroca
- Soroca’s circular fortress stands beside the Dniester. The Rudi survey point, part of the Struve Geodetic Arc, is farther north within the district.
- Strășeni
- Strășeni contains Căpriana Monastery in the Codri hills. Its district town lies on the route between Chișinău and Călărași.
- Șoldănești
- Șoldănești lies between Florești and the Dniester districts. Rural valleys and wooded slopes sit around its small district centre.
- Ștefan Vodă
- Ștefan Vodă includes the Purcari wine area. Palanca lies near the southeastern edge of Moldova, close to Ukraine’s route towards Odesa.
- Taraclia
- Taraclia is associated with Moldova’s Bulgarian community. It is a separate district and should not be combined with the autonomous territory of Gagauzia.
- Telenești
- Telenești occupies rolling country between the northern agricultural belt and central Moldova. The Răut valley crosses this wider region.
- Ungheni
- Ungheni faces Romania across the Prut. Its railway bridge and border connections link Moldova with Iași and the wider Romanian network.
- Chișinău Municipality
- Chișinău is a separate municipality with surrounding settlements. It is distinct from adjacent Ialoveni, Strășeni, Criuleni and Anenii Noi districts.
- Bălți Municipality
- Bălți is a separate municipality in northern Moldova. Zoom in to distinguish its compact territory from the neighbouring districts.
- Bender Municipality
- Bender, also called Tighina, is a separate municipality. It is on the west bank yet under the Transnistrian de facto authorities; the river alone does not define effective control.
- Gagauzia
- Gagauzia is an autonomous territorial unit with Comrat as its centre. Its territory has separate parts. Gagauz is a Turkic language, and many Gagauz people are Orthodox Christian.
- Left-bank territorial units
- These constitutional territorial units are shown within internationally recognised Moldova. Transnistrian de facto control differs from this reference outline, including Bender on the west bank and exceptions around Dubăsari. Tiraspol is the de facto administrative centre.
How this one works
How many districts and territories are on the map?
37. Every one of them is on the map, and a run asks 8 of them. Pass a round and the places you found in it drop out of the pool, so the next run is what you have left.
What is a round?
A run of 8 questions, and 6 right passes it. 5 rounds cover the whole map, and the counter at the top of the Moldova page counts the ones behind you. Passing is what banks a round's finds: miss the mark and nothing is taken off the map, so every place that round asked about is still there to be asked again. A round is always the places you have not found yet, and when fewer than five are left it is topped up with a few you have found as review, so the last round is never one or two questions. Three quarters of it passes it.
Can I start the map over?
Yes. "Reset this map" under the counter puts all 37 back in the pool and sets the rounds to zero the moment you press it, so the whole map is there to be found again from nothing. It clears this map only; the other maps of Moldova keep their progress.
Do I need an account?
No. The game plays in the page, and a guest's progress is kept in their own browser. Signing in carries it between devices and earns XP for a run.
What happens when I get one wrong?
The map names what you actually hit, then lights up the right answer in green and tells you something about the place. Missing one is how most of this map gets learned.
