Senegalese regions, found on the map
Find all fourteen regions. The coast, the rivers and The Gambia cutting into the middle make each one easy to reason out.
14 to find, 8 a run.
2 rounds, 6 of 8 to pass each. Pass one and its places are yours.

What the map tells you about each one
The paragraph the game shows when you find each one. Reading them first is not cheating.
- Dakar
- Dakar covers well under one percent of Senegal’s land but holds nearly a quarter of its people. Cap-Vert is the westernmost point of mainland Africa.
- Thiès
- Thiès holds the resort coast of the Petite Côte around Mbour and Saly. Its capital was a rail hub on the line from Dakar to Niger.
- Diourbel
- Diourbel holds Touba, the holy city of the Mouride brotherhood and Senegal’s second largest city. Millions come for the Grand Magal pilgrimage each year.
- Louga
- Louga runs from the Grande Côte into the dry pastures of the Ferlo. It is cattle and groundnut country, and many of its people work abroad.
- Saint-Louis
- Saint-Louis follows the river border with Mauritania. Rice and sugar are grown under irrigation around Richard-Toll and Lac de Guiers.
- Matam
- Matam lies in the Fouta Toro, the homeland of the Haalpulaar. Money sent home by emigrants has built many of its towns.
- Fatick
- Fatick is the heart of the old Serer kingdom of Sine. The mangroves and islands of the Saloum delta fill its coast.
- Kaolack
- Kaolack is the market center of the groundnut basin, and salt is harvested from the flats by the river. Its capital is a seat of the Tijani brotherhood.
- Kaffrine
- Kaffrine was split off Kaolack in 2008. It is one of the main groundnut growing regions.
- Tambacounda
- Tambacounda is the largest region by area and one of the least densely populated. Most of Niokolo-Koba National Park lies inside it.
- Kédougou
- Kédougou, split off Tambacounda in 2008, is the only hilly part of Senegal. It holds the country’s gold mines and the Bassari country, a UNESCO site.
- Kolda
- Kolda is the eastern part of the Casamance, a green farming region where Pulaar is the main language.
- Sédhiou
- Sédhiou was split off Kolda in 2008. Its capital was a French trading post on the Casamance River.
- Ziguinchor
- Ziguinchor is the lower Casamance, a land of rice paddies, mangroves and Jola villages. A separatist conflict simmered here from 1982 until a peace deal in 2023.
How this one works
How many regions are on the map?
14. Every one of them is on the map, and a run asks 8 of them. Pass a round and the places you found in it drop out of the pool, so the next run is what you have left.
What is a round?
A run of 8 questions, and 6 right passes it. 2 rounds cover the whole map, and the counter at the top of the Senegal page counts the ones behind you. Passing is what banks a round's finds: miss the mark and nothing is taken off the map, so every place that round asked about is still there to be asked again. A round is always the places you have not found yet, and when fewer than five are left it is topped up with a few you have found as review, so the last round is never one or two questions. Three quarters of it passes it.
Can I start the map over?
Yes. "Reset this map" under the counter puts all 14 back in the pool and sets the rounds to zero the moment you press it, so the whole map is there to be found again from nothing. It clears this map only; the other maps of Senegal keep their progress.
Do I need an account?
No. The game plays in the page, and a guest's progress is kept in their own browser. Signing in carries it between devices and earns XP for a run.
What happens when I get one wrong?
The map names what you actually hit, then lights up the right answer in green and tells you something about the place. Missing one is how most of this map gets learned.
