Meeting people in Portuguese
How are you, what is your name, where are you from, I like it: the first five minutes. Play the ten Portuguese words against the clock, with a note on how locals really use each one after every answer. All ten are written out below.

The formal version using the third person. Used with people you do not know well or those older than you. A respectful default with strangers.
The classic reply. "Estou" comes from the verb "estar" and is used for temporary states. The unstressed "es" is nearly silent, so it sounds like "sh-TOH baym".
In Portugal você can sound stiff; many people use the person's name or title instead. Among friends: "e tu?" (eh TOO).
Literally "I like it a lot".
To a woman, "bem-vinda"; to a group, "bem-vindos".
