These approximate learning areas cover the central visitor neighborhoods and the old airport corridor; they are not official wards or a map of the whole metropolitan area.
A little Bengaluru before you go
Geography & first impressions
Bengaluru, still widely called Bangalore, is Karnataka’s capital: a city of gardens, markets, research institutes and software offices.
Bengaluru became the official English name in 2014, while Bangalore remains common in conversation and older business names. Both refer to Karnataka’s capital; you will encounter both spellings when planning a visit. Bengaluru stands roughly 900 meters above sea level on the Deccan plateau. Its elevation moderates the heat compared with low-lying coastal cities, although hot afternoons and sudden rain still shape a day outside.
Lalbagh and Cubbon Park are the most visible parts of Bengaluru’s reputation as a garden city. Older neighborhoods also have mature street trees, though rapid growth has put pressure on greenery and lakes. The old market and fort area, Cubbon Park’s museum quarter, and Lalbagh with Basavanagudi make practical clusters. Traffic can turn a short distance into a long journey, so staying in one part of the city gives more time at each stop.
