Downtown

The waterfront city center, including the Gaslamp Quarter, Little Italy and East Village. Its commercial streets developed as New Town, closer to the bay than Old Town.

Follow the coast from Point Loma through the beach communities to La Jolla and Torrey Pines, then turn inland to the neighborhoods around Balboa Park and Mission Valley. These twenty-six community planning areas cover the center and coast rather than the whole city. Hillcrest is inside Uptown; the Gaslamp Quarter and Little Italy are inside Downtown. Select an area to read about it, then try finding it on the map.

Geography & significance

The bay, the Pacific and a city that continues across a border.

The long Point Loma peninsula shelters San Diego Bay from the open Pacific. Downtown grew along its eastern shore, while the bay became a base for shipping, fishing and the Navy. Mission Bay, farther north, is a separate body of water. San Diego and Tijuana belong to different countries but share family ties, trade, manufacturing and daily travel. The border cuts across a connected region; crossing it still requires the appropriate documents and can involve long waits.

Cool coastal water and warmer air above it help form a marine layer of low cloud. The pattern is especially familiar in late spring and early summer, giving May Gray and June Gloom their names. Inland neighborhoods can be sunny while the coast stays cloudy. La Jolla is part of the city of San Diego, even though its village, beaches and postal addresses give it a strong identity of its own. Coronado, across the bay, is a separate city. City, community and county names describe different boundaries.

A great lath structure above a lily pond, built for the 1915 exposition. Its planting and reflection make it one of Balboa Park’s most recognizable views.

Find the museums and gardens of Balboa Park, Chicano Park’s murals, the waterfront and the coastal landmarks north to Torrey Pines. The essential round introduces the main places; the detours add research architecture, a historic roller coaster and contemporary art beside the ocean.
