Nineteen districts for a first visit
Sé
The cathedral, Pátio do Colégio, Farol Santander and Municipal Market anchor the old center. Choose a manageable walking route between individual sights.
Place Sé and República in the old center, follow Paulista toward Jardim Paulista, then head west to Pinheiros and south to Ibirapuera and Ipiranga. These are nineteen of São Paulo’s 96 official municipal districts, selected for this guide. Neighborhoods such as Bixiga and Vila Madalena sit inside larger districts; the map covers this part of the city rather than the whole municipality.
A little São Paulo before you go
Geography & first impressions
São Paulo rewards a visit organized around a few districts: the historic center, Avenida Paulista, the western neighborhoods and Ibirapuera.
São Paulo stands on a plateau inland from Brazil’s Atlantic coast. Santos is a separate coastal city beyond the Serra do Mar; a beach trip needs its own travel time rather than a short walk from downtown. Paulistano refers to someone from the city of São Paulo. Paulista refers more broadly to the state. The distinction is useful in local culture and food writing, where the city and its much larger surrounding state appear side by side.
Give downtown, Paulista and the park or western districts separate blocks of time. A museum, a nearby walk and a meal make a fuller day than repeatedly crossing the city to collect distant sights. This guide selects nineteen official districts around central, western and southern visitor areas. São Paulo has 96 municipal districts, and the metropolitan area extends into other municipalities; the learning map deliberately covers a smaller area.
