Meeting people in Malayalam
How are you, what is your name, where are you from, I like it: the first five minutes. Play the ten Malayalam words against the clock, with a note on how locals really use each one after every answer. All ten are written out below.

Literally "are you well?" A warm formal greeting used with elders, strangers, or new acquaintances. The response is usually "സുഖമാണ്" (su-kha-MAHN), "I am well."
The standard reply to "how are you." Adding "നന്ദി" (thanks) after shows extra politeness. Short and natural.
Literally "and to you?".
For backwaters and tea hills, the obvious comment.
