What the map tells you about each one
The paragraph the game shows when you find each one. Reading them first is not cheating.
Seoul, Gangwon and Chungcheong8 on the map
- Daejeon
- Daejeon developed around a major railway junction. Its Daedeok research district contains public research institutes and KAIST.
- Gangwon
- The Taebaek Mountains separate inland basins from the east coast. PyeongChang and Gangneung hosted events at the 2018 Winter Olympics, and Gangwon became a special self-governing province in 2023.
- Gyeonggi
- Gyeonggi surrounds the capital and has its provincial seat in Suwon. The Han flows through the province toward the Yellow Sea, while its northern edge meets the border area.
- Incheon
- Incheon connects the capital region to the Yellow Sea. Its international airport opened in 2001 on reclaimed land, and the city was the site of the September 1950 amphibious landing.
- North Chungcheong
- North Chungcheong is South Korea’s only landlocked province. Cheongju is its capital, while Chungju Lake belongs to the Han River system and Daecheong Lake to the Geum system.
- Sejong
- Sejong became a special self-governing city in 2012 and houses many national ministries. It is named after King Sejong, who created Hangul.
- Seoul
- Seoul became the Joseon capital in 1394. Its palaces stand north of the Han, while the wider capital region includes Incheon and Gyeonggi.
- South Chungcheong
- South Chungcheong includes the Taean Peninsula and extensive tidal flats. Its provincial government moved from Daejeon to Naepo in 2013.
Jeolla, Gyeongsang and Jeju8 on the map
- Busan
- Busan is a major container port on the Korea Strait. It served as South Korea’s wartime capital for much of the Korean War and remains an important centre of maritime trade.
- Daegu
- Daegu grew as a centre of textile production. Its basin setting contributes to hot summers, and the Yangnyeongsi medicine market is part of the city’s commercial heritage.
- Jeju
- Jeju’s volcanic landscape rises to Hallasan, South Korea’s highest mountain. Its lava tubes are UNESCO-listed, and its haenyeo diving tradition is recognised as intangible cultural heritage.
- Jeonnam-Gwangju
- Jeonnam-Gwangju Special Metropolitan City was formed on 1 July 2026 by merging Gwangju and South Jeolla. It combines an inland urban centre with farming districts, tidal flats and many offshore islands.
- North Gyeongsang
- North Gyeongsang contains Gyeongju, the former capital of Silla, and the industrial port of Pohang. The Nakdong rises in Gangwon before flowing through this province toward the south.
- North Jeolla
- North Jeolla, also called Jeonbuk, became a special self-governing province in 2024. Jeonju is known for its hanok village and regional cuisine, while Gunsan lies by the Geum estuary.
- South Gyeongsang
- South Gyeongsang includes the shipyards of Geoje and the industrial city of Changwon. Jirisan lies along its western edge and became South Korea’s first national park in 1967.
- Ulsan
- Ulsan is a major centre for shipbuilding and vehicle manufacturing. The Taehwa River crosses the city before reaching the Sea of Japan, known in Korea as the East Sea.

How many provinces and province-level cities are on the map?
16. Every one of them is on the map, and a run asks 8 of them. Pass a round and the places you found in it drop out of the pool, so the next run is what you have left.
What is a round?
A run of 8 questions, and 6 right passes it. 2 rounds cover the whole map, and the counter at the top of the South Korea page counts the ones behind you. Passing is what banks a round's finds: miss the mark and nothing is taken off the map, so every place that round asked about is still there to be asked again. A round is always the places you have not found yet, and when fewer than five are left it is topped up with a few you have found as review, so the last round is never one or two questions. Three quarters of it passes it.
Can I start the map over?
Yes. "Reset this map" under the counter puts all 16 back in the pool and sets the rounds to zero the moment you press it, so the whole map is there to be found again from nothing. It clears this map only; the other maps of South Korea keep their progress.
Do I need an account?
No. The game plays in the page, and a guest's progress is kept in their own browser. Signing in carries it between devices and earns XP for a run.
What happens when I get one wrong?
The map names what you actually hit, then lights up the right answer in green and tells you something about the place. Missing one is how most of this map gets learned.
