What the map tells you about each one

The paragraph the game shows when you find each one. Reading them first is not cheating.

Groningen
Groningen province reaches from its university city to the Wadden coast and the German border. It is distinct from the city of Groningen.
Friesland
Friesland, officially Fryslân, includes Leeuwarden, lakes and several Wadden islands. Dutch and Frisian are official languages here.
Drenthe
Assen is the capital of Drenthe. Heath, woodland and prehistoric stone burial chambers called hunebedden characterise its inland landscapes.
Overijssel
Zwolle is the provincial capital. The IJssel follows much of its western side; Enschede belongs to the eastern region of Twente.
Flevoland
Flevoland became a province in 1986. Its polders were reclaimed during the Zuiderzee Works, while former islands such as Urk and Schokland preserve an older history.
Gelderland
Gelderland contains the Veluwe and stretches of the Rhine’s branches. Arnhem lies on the Nederrijn, Nijmegen on the Waal.
Utrecht
Utrecht province sits around the city of the same name. Its eastern hills, river plains and central transport position connect the western cities with the interior.
North Holland
Amsterdam lies in North Holland, but Haarlem is its provincial capital. The province includes coastal dunes, the Zaan region and the Wadden island of Texel.
South Holland
The Hague is South Holland’s capital and the seat of the national government. Rotterdam’s port links this densely settled province to the North Sea and the Rhine delta.
Zeeland
Zeeland’s islands and peninsulas lie between estuaries of the Rhine, Meuse and Scheldt. Middelburg is its capital; flood defences are central to its landscape.
North Brabant
North Brabant includes Eindhoven, Tilburg and Breda. Its capital is ’s-Hertogenbosch. The province is distinct from the Belgian provinces bearing the Brabant name.
Limburg
Dutch Limburg follows the Meuse through Venlo, Roermond and Maastricht. It is separate from Belgian Limburg; its southern hills contain Vaalserberg, the European Netherlands’ highest point.

How this one works

How many provinces are on the map?

12. Every one of them is on the map, and a run asks 8 of them. Pass a round and the places you found in it drop out of the pool, so the next run is what you have left.

What is a round?

A run of 8 questions, and 6 right passes it. 2 rounds cover the whole map, and the counter at the top of the Netherlands page counts the ones behind you. Passing is what banks a round's finds: miss the mark and nothing is taken off the map, so every place that round asked about is still there to be asked again. A round is always the places you have not found yet, and when fewer than five are left it is topped up with a few you have found as review, so the last round is never one or two questions. Three quarters of it passes it.

Can I start the map over?

Yes. "Reset this map" under the counter puts all 12 back in the pool and sets the rounds to zero the moment you press it, so the whole map is there to be found again from nothing. It clears this map only; the other maps of the Netherlands keep their progress.

Do I need an account?

No. The game plays in the page, and a guest's progress is kept in their own browser. Signing in carries it between devices and earns XP for a run.

What happens when I get one wrong?

The map names what you actually hit, then lights up the right answer in green and tells you something about the place. Missing one is how most of this map gets learned.
