What the map tells you about each one
The paragraph the game shows when you find each one. Reading them first is not cheating.
- Attapeu
- Attapeu occupies the southeastern corner of Laos. Its river valleys lie south of Sekong and east of Champasak.
- Bokeo
- Houayxay is the provincial capital on the Mekong. Bokeo is a small northern province, distinct from neighbouring Luang Namtha.
- Bolikhamsai
- Pakxan stands near the Nam Xan–Mekong confluence. Bolikhamsai connects the central river valley with eastern mountain country.
- Champasak
- Pakse is the provincial capital. Vat Phou and the Mekong islands of Si Phan Don lie within Champasak.
- Houaphanh
- Sam Neua is the provincial capital and Vieng Xai lies farther east. Houaphanh is distinct from the jar-site plateau to its southwest.
- Khammouane
- Thakhek faces Thailand across the Mekong. The province includes Kong Lor Cave and Hin Nam No’s limestone landscape.
- Luang Namtha
- Luang Namtha and Muang Sing lie in this mountainous province. It is north of Bokeo and west of Oudomxay.
- Luang Prabang
- Luang Prabang city gives its name to the surrounding province. The province is larger than the defined historic town inscribed by UNESCO.
- Oudomxay
- Muang Xay is the provincial capital. Oudomxay connects northern overland routes with the Mekong at Pakbeng.
- Phongsaly
- Phongsaly town lies in the northern mountains. The Nam Ou drains much of this long northern province.
- Salavan
- Salavan stretches from the western lowlands towards Vietnam. Parts of the Bolaven uplands lie in the province.
- Savannakhet
- The provincial capital is officially Kaysone Phomvihane and is commonly called Savannakhet. It stands on the Mekong opposite Mukdahan.
- Vientiane Capital
- The national capital has a separate prefecture. It is not part of the neighbouring province of Vientiane; zoom in to distinguish the two.
- Vientiane Province
- Phonhong is the provincial capital. Vang Vieng and the Nam Ngum basin belong to the province, not the separate capital prefecture.
- Xayaboury
- Also written Xaignabouli or Sayaboury, this province lies predominantly west of the Mekong. Its long shape follows the Thai frontier.
- Xaisomboun
- Xaisomboun was re-established as a province in 2013. Anouvong is its capital and Phou Bia rises within the province.
- Sekong
- Also written Xekong, the province shares its name with a river and its capital. Its eastern edge meets Vietnam.
- Xiangkhouang
- Phonsavan is the provincial capital. The surrounding plateau contains the megalithic landscapes known as the Plain of Jars.
How this one works
How many provinces and capital prefecture are on the map?
18. Every one of them is on the map, and a run asks 8 of them. Pass a round and the places you found in it drop out of the pool, so the next run is what you have left.
What is a round?
A run of 8 questions, and 6 right passes it. 3 rounds cover the whole map, and the counter at the top of the Laos page counts the ones behind you. Passing is what banks a round's finds: miss the mark and nothing is taken off the map, so every place that round asked about is still there to be asked again. A round is always the places you have not found yet, and when fewer than five are left it is topped up with a few you have found as review, so the last round is never one or two questions. Three quarters of it passes it.
Can I start the map over?
Yes. "Reset this map" under the counter puts all 18 back in the pool and sets the rounds to zero the moment you press it, so the whole map is there to be found again from nothing. It clears this map only; the other maps of Laos keep their progress.
Do I need an account?
No. The game plays in the page, and a guest's progress is kept in their own browser. Signing in carries it between devices and earns XP for a run.
What happens when I get one wrong?
The map names what you actually hit, then lights up the right answer in green and tells you something about the place. Missing one is how most of this map gets learned.
