The essential shop question. У вас є хліб? У вас є молоко? Combine with pointing at your phone screen for anything you cannot name. "Є" (ye) is the third-person singular of "to be" and is the hinge the whole question turns on.
Short and powerful. "Де хліб?" (where is the bread?), "де каса?" (where is the checkout?), "де туалет?" (where is the toilet?). The answer will come with pointing, which is all you need to navigate any supermarket.
The cashier will ask you this at every checkout: "вам пакет?" (do you need a bag?) or just a raised "пакет?" Plastic bags cost a few hryvnias. Answer так or ні and you have passed the most common real-world listening test at the checkout.
