Study for Sweden’s citizenship test
Medborgarskapsprovet is a written paper of 60 multiple-choice questions in 90 minutes, in Swedish, and the questions are drawn from one book: UHR’s study material Sverige i fokus. Studying it chapter by chapter is the whole preparation. UHR has not published a pass mark yet, so the 45 used here is ours.

About the Medborgarskapsprovet i samhällskunskap
Medborgarskapsprovet is new. The first paper was sat on 15 August 2026, by about a thousand people at Stockholmsmässan, and UHR ran it as a calibration sitting: the pass mark comes out of those results in the autumn, with results published in October. Everything else about the exam is settled. Sixty multiple choice questions, four options each, ninety minutes, on paper, in Swedish.
There is one thing to study, and UHR publishes it: Sverige i fokus, thirteen chapters on Swedish society, which the exam is drawn from. The units here follow those chapters one at a time so you can work through the book with the questions next to it, and the full test draws its sixty across all thirteen rather than leaving your weakest chapter to chance.
Common questions
How many questions do you have to get right?
Nobody knows yet. UHR ran the first sitting, on 15 August 2026, as an utprövningsprov: a calibration paper, from which it sets the pass mark during the autumn, with results published in October. A pass still counts in full. The 45 of 60 used here is ours, picked as a working target until UHR publishes the real number, and every screen that shows it says so.
What is the test like?
Sixty multiple choice questions, four options each with one correct, ninety minutes, on paper, in Swedish only. UHR puts the level at year nine of Swedish school. The first sitting gave extra time because it was a calibration paper.
Where do the questions come from?
One book. UHR and Skolverket publish the study material Sverige i fokus, and it says on its opening page that the test is based on it. Everything here is written from its thirteen chapters, which are also the topics on this page, plus the five sample questions UHR publishes, reproduced as they are asked.
Are these the real exam questions?
No, and there is no way for them to be. UHR publishes no question pool and reuses its questions between sittings, so unlike Denmark it never releases the papers it has set. Questions here are ours, written from the same material the exam is drawn from.
Who has to sit it, and how do you register?
You do not sign yourself up. Migrationsverket refers applicants in citizenship cases to UHR, and only someone who has been referred may sit it. You may also meet the knowledge requirement in other ways, through earlier grades or education, in which case you do not need the test at all. Migrationsverket is the place to check which applies to you.
What does it cost?
Two thousand kronor, under the regulation, from the sittings held in 2027. The August 2026 paper was free. Applicants who are stateless and hold a refugee declaration or travel document from a Swedish authority are exempt.
When is the next sitting?
Not announced. Registration is closed and UHR says information about the next civics sitting is coming in the autumn. The test is being introduced in stages, and the August 2026 paper was the civics part of it.
Can you take it again if you fail?
Yes, you may sit it again, and a new registration is needed each time. Whether you are eligible for another attempt is a question for Migrationsverket rather than UHR.
