What the map tells you about each one
The paragraph the game shows when you find each one. Reading them first is not cheating.
- Concepción
- The department faces the Paraguay River. Concepción city is its capital, while Amambay lies farther east.
- San Pedro
- San Pedro del Ycuamandiyú is the capital. The Jejuí Guazú crosses this farming region towards the Paraguay River.
- Cordillera
- Caacupé is the departmental capital and an important pilgrimage centre. San Bernardino lies on Lake Ypacaraí nearby.
- Guairá
- Villarrica is the capital. The Ybytyruzú hills give the surrounding countryside a different shape from the western Chaco.
- Caaguazú
- Coronel Oviedo is the capital, rather than the city named Caaguazú. Roads here connect Asunción with Ciudad del Este.
- Caazapá
- The department combines farming landscapes with surviving eastern forest. Its capital shares the departmental name.
- Itapúa
- Encarnación is the capital. The Jesuit missions of Trinidad and Jesús de Tavarangue lie within this department.
- Misiones
- San Juan Bautista is the capital. This Paraguayan department is separate from Argentina’s Misiones Province.
- Paraguarí
- The department lies southeast of the capital region. Its landscape includes hills, farming country and wetland margins.
- Alto Paraná
- Ciudad del Este is the capital. Itaipú’s dam stands on the Paraná near Hernandarias, north of the city.
- Central
- Areguá is the capital of Central. Asunción is a separate capital district, even though its metropolitan area extends into Central.
- Ñeembucú
- Pilar stands on the Paraguay River. Extensive wetlands lie near the meeting of the Paraguay and Paraná systems.
- Amambay
- The capital faces Ponta Porã in Brazil. Cerro Corá lies in this department, east of Concepción.
- Canindeyú
- Salto del Guairá is the capital. The department connects northeastern farming areas with border trade.
- Presidente Hayes
- Villa Hayes is the capital. This is one of the three Chaco departments, alongside Boquerón and Alto Paraguay.
- Alto Paraguay
- Fuerte Olimpo faces the Paraguay River. The department reaches the Bolivian and Brazilian borders and the wider Pantanal region.
- Boquerón
- Filadelfia is the capital. Indigenous territories and Mennonite settlements are part of this extensive dry-forest region.
- Asunción
- Asunción is Paraguay’s national capital and a separate district. It is not one of the country’s 17 departments.
How this one works
How many departments and the capital district are on the map?
18. Every one of them is on the map, and a run asks 8 of them. Pass a round and the places you found in it drop out of the pool, so the next run is what you have left.
What is a round?
A run of 8 questions, and 6 right passes it. 3 rounds cover the whole map, and the counter at the top of the Paraguay page counts the ones behind you. Passing is what banks a round's finds: miss the mark and nothing is taken off the map, so every place that round asked about is still there to be asked again. A round is always the places you have not found yet, and when fewer than five are left it is topped up with a few you have found as review, so the last round is never one or two questions. Three quarters of it passes it.
Can I start the map over?
Yes. "Reset this map" under the counter puts all 18 back in the pool and sets the rounds to zero the moment you press it, so the whole map is there to be found again from nothing. It clears this map only; the other maps of Paraguay keep their progress.
Do I need an account?
No. The game plays in the page, and a guest's progress is kept in their own browser. Signing in carries it between devices and earns XP for a run.
What happens when I get one wrong?
The map names what you actually hit, then lights up the right answer in green and tells you something about the place. Missing one is how most of this map gets learned.
The other maps of Paraguay
Bolivia has the same map in Bolivian departments. El Salvador has the same map in Salvadoran departments. Guatemala has the same map in Guatemalan departments. Honduras has the same map in Honduran departments. Uruguay has the same map in Uruguayan departments. All three together on the Paraguay atlas page, the country itself on the Paraguay guide, and the other two hundred on the world map.
