What the map tells you about each one
The paragraph the game shows when you find each one. Reading them first is not cheating.
- Jenin
- Jenin Governorate combines its city with villages and farming areas in the northern West Bank.
- Tubas
- Tubas and the northern Jordan Valley include upland communities and lower agricultural landscapes.
- Tulkarm
- Tulkarm Governorate lies along the western side of the northern West Bank. Its administrative boundary is distinct from crossing and access arrangements.
- Nablus
- Nablus Governorate surrounds a historic city between Mount Ebal and Mount Gerizim and extends into surrounding rural areas.
- Qalqiliya
- Qalqiliya Governorate includes the city near the western edge and villages to its east. It is not a map of the separation barrier.
- Salfit
- Salfit is a smaller governorate in the central-western West Bank, associated with hill villages and olive cultivation.
- Ramallah and Al-Bireh
- Ramallah and Al-Bireh are neighbouring cities within a governorate extending across central West Bank hills. Ramallah is an administrative centre, not a substitute for the Palestinian claim to East Jerusalem as capital.
- Jericho and Al-Aghwar
- Jericho and Al-Aghwar includes the low Jordan Valley. Jericho city is a separate target from the full governorate.
- Jerusalem
- This Palestinian reference governorate includes East Jerusalem and surrounding West Bank areas. It is not the Israeli Jerusalem District or a boundary of present Palestinian control.
- Bethlehem
- Bethlehem Governorate includes the city, neighbouring towns, terraces and drier lands extending eastwards.
- Hebron
- Hebron is the southernmost West Bank governorate, containing the city of Al-Khalil and many towns and villages.
- North Gaza
- North Gaza includes Jabalia, Beit Lahia and Beit Hanoun. Governorate outlines are dated administrative references, not present conditions or military zones.
- Gaza
- Gaza Governorate contains Gaza City and nearby communities. It is one of five governorates in the Gaza Strip, not a synonym for the whole territory.
- Deir al-Balah
- Deir al-Balah Governorate lies between Gaza and Khan Yunis. Its name is also the name of a coastal town.
- Khan Yunis
- Khan Yunis Governorate occupies the southern-central Gaza Strip and contains its namesake city and surrounding communities.
- Rafah
- Rafah Governorate meets the Egyptian border. This learning boundary does not establish border-crossing availability or safe access.
How this one works
How many governorates are on the map?
16. Every one of them is on the map, and a run asks 8 of them. Pass a round and the places you found in it drop out of the pool, so the next run is what you have left.
What is a round?
A run of 8 questions, and 6 right passes it. 2 rounds cover the whole map, and the counter at the top of the Palestine page counts the ones behind you. Passing is what banks a round's finds: miss the mark and nothing is taken off the map, so every place that round asked about is still there to be asked again. A round is always the places you have not found yet, and when fewer than five are left it is topped up with a few you have found as review, so the last round is never one or two questions. Three quarters of it passes it.
Can I start the map over?
Yes. "Reset this map" under the counter puts all 16 back in the pool and sets the rounds to zero the moment you press it, so the whole map is there to be found again from nothing. It clears this map only; the other maps of Palestine keep their progress.
Do I need an account?
No. The game plays in the page, and a guest's progress is kept in their own browser. Signing in carries it between devices and earns XP for a run.
What happens when I get one wrong?
The map names what you actually hit, then lights up the right answer in green and tells you something about the place. Missing one is how most of this map gets learned.
