What the map tells you about each one
The paragraph the game shows when you find each one. Reading them first is not cheating.
- Oslo
- Oslo is both a municipality and a county. The capital sits between Oslofjord and the forests of the Marka.
- Akershus
- Akershus wraps around the capital and includes Lillestrøm and the airport at Gardermoen. It was restored as a county in 2024.
- Østfold
- Østfold lies east of Oslofjord. The Glomma reaches the sea at Fredrikstad, once an important timber port.
- Buskerud
- Buskerud stretches from Drammen into the Hallingdal and Numedal valleys. Its mountain resorts connect the capital region with the interior.
- Innlandet
- Innlandet contains the former counties of Hedmark and Oppland. It includes much of Jotunheimen and the agricultural districts around Mjøsa.
- Vestfold
- Vestfold has a compact coast facing Oslofjord. The Oseberg and Gokstad ship burials connect the region with Viking history.
- Telemark
- Telemark reaches from the coast through lakes and valleys to the Hardangervidda. Its canal links inland waterways with the sea.
- Agder
- Agder occupies the southern tip of Norway. Its coastal towns have maritime histories, while wooded valleys rise inland.
- Rogaland
- Rogaland includes Stavanger and the agricultural district of Jæren. Offshore petroleum and the Lysefjord are important parts of its economy and landscape.
- Vestland
- Vestland combines the former counties of Hordaland and Sogn og Fjordane. Bergen, the Hardangerfjord and most of the Sognefjord lie here.
- Møre og Romsdal
- Møre og Romsdal contains the Geirangerfjord and the coastal cities of Ålesund, Molde and Kristiansund. Fishing and maritime industries connect them.
- Trøndelag
- Trøndelag occupies central Norway. Trondheim was the medieval capital, and fertile farming districts surround Trondheimsfjord.
- Nordland
- Nordland reaches across the Arctic Circle. Lofoten lies off its coast, and Narvik exports iron ore carried by rail from Sweden.
- Troms
- Troms includes Tromsø and the Lyngen Alps. Its islands and fjords lie well north of the Arctic Circle.
- Finnmark
- Finnmark borders Finland and Russia. Sámi and Kven histories are central to the region, and the Sámi Parliament sits in Karasjok.
How this one works
How many counties are on the map?
15. Every one of them is on the map, and a run asks 8 of them. Pass a round and the places you found in it drop out of the pool, so the next run is what you have left.
What is a round?
A run of 8 questions, and 6 right passes it. 2 rounds cover the whole map, and the counter at the top of the Norway page counts the ones behind you. Passing is what banks a round's finds: miss the mark and nothing is taken off the map, so every place that round asked about is still there to be asked again. A round is always the places you have not found yet, and when fewer than five are left it is topped up with a few you have found as review, so the last round is never one or two questions. Three quarters of it passes it.
Can I start the map over?
Yes. "Reset this map" under the counter puts all 15 back in the pool and sets the rounds to zero the moment you press it, so the whole map is there to be found again from nothing. It clears this map only; the other maps of Norway keep their progress.
Do I need an account?
No. The game plays in the page, and a guest's progress is kept in their own browser. Signing in carries it between devices and earns XP for a run.
What happens when I get one wrong?
The map names what you actually hit, then lights up the right answer in green and tells you something about the place. Missing one is how most of this map gets learned.
The other maps of Norway
Hungary has the same map in Hungarian counties and Budapest. Ireland has the same map in Irish counties. Kenya has the same map in Kenyan counties. Romania has the same map in Romanian counties and Bucharest. Sweden has the same map in Swedish counties. All three together on the Norway atlas page, the country itself on the Norway guide, and the other two hundred on the world map.
