What the map tells you about each one
The paragraph the game shows when you find each one. Reading them first is not cheating.
- Johor
- Johor faces Singapore across the Straits of Johor. Johor Bahru is its capital; Singapore is a separate country.
- Kedah
- Kedah includes mainland rice-growing areas and the Langkawi archipelago. Alor Setar is its capital.
- Kelantan
- Kelantan faces the South China Sea and borders Thailand. Kota Bharu is its capital and an important centre of east-coast traditions.
- Melaka
- Melaka is both a state name and the name of its historic capital. The city shares a World Heritage property with George Town.
- Negeri Sembilan
- Seremban is the capital of Negeri Sembilan. Its royal institutions and adat perpatih traditions have distinctive Minangkabau connections.
- Pahang
- Pahang is the peninsula’s largest state by area. Kuantan is its capital, and the Pahang River reaches its east coast.
- Penang
- Penang consists of Penang Island and Seberang Perai on the mainland. George Town is its capital, so Penang is not simply a city name.
- Perak
- Perak includes Ipoh, its capital, and the archaeological landscapes of the Lenggong Valley. Tin mining helped shape its modern history.
- Perlis
- Perlis is Malaysia’s smallest state by area. Kangar is its capital; nearby Kedah is a separate state.
- Selangor
- Selangor surrounds the two peninsular federal territories but does not include them. Shah Alam is the state capital, and Port Klang connects maritime trade.
- Terengganu
- Terengganu faces the South China Sea. Kuala Terengganu is its capital; coastal crafts, fishing and offshore energy shape different parts of the state.
- Sabah
- Sabah includes Mount Kinabalu and coasts facing three seas. Kota Kinabalu is its capital; Sarawak is the other Malaysian state on Borneo.
- Sarawak
- Sarawak is Malaysia’s largest state by area. Kuching is its capital, and the Rajang and Baram connect different river landscapes.
- Kuala Lumpur
- Kuala Lumpur is the national capital and seat of Parliament. It is a federal territory separate from surrounding Selangor and from Putrajaya.
- Labuan
- Labuan is a federal territory off Borneo, separate from Sabah. Its main island lies north of Brunei Bay.
- Putrajaya
- Putrajaya is the federal administrative centre and a separate federal territory. Kuala Lumpur remains the national capital and seat of Parliament.
How this one works
How many states and federal territories are on the map?
16. Every one of them is on the map, and a run asks 8 of them. Pass a round and the places you found in it drop out of the pool, so the next run is what you have left.
What is a round?
A run of 8 questions, and 6 right passes it. 2 rounds cover the whole map, and the counter at the top of the Malaysia page counts the ones behind you. Passing is what banks a round's finds: miss the mark and nothing is taken off the map, so every place that round asked about is still there to be asked again. A round is always the places you have not found yet, and when fewer than five are left it is topped up with a few you have found as review, so the last round is never one or two questions. Three quarters of it passes it.
Can I start the map over?
Yes. "Reset this map" under the counter puts all 16 back in the pool and sets the rounds to zero the moment you press it, so the whole map is there to be found again from nothing. It clears this map only; the other maps of Malaysia keep their progress.
Do I need an account?
No. The game plays in the page, and a guest's progress is kept in their own browser. Signing in carries it between devices and earns XP for a run.
What happens when I get one wrong?
The map names what you actually hit, then lights up the right answer in green and tells you something about the place. Missing one is how most of this map gets learned.
