SOUTH SUDAN GUIDE — SOURCES AND SCOPE Reviewed 29 October 2026. Routes: /atlas/south-sudan and /facts/ss. MAPS Administrative reference: OCHA South Sudan COD-AB v03, via HDX. https://data.humdata.org/dataset/cod-ab-ssd Contributors: South Sudan Information Management Working Group (IMWG), National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), IOM and OCHA South Sudan. Licence: Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 IGO. https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/igo/ Source dataset valid 19 December 2022, reviewed 9 October 2024; downloaded 29 October 2026 from the GeoJSON resource published 19 August 2026. The source ADM1 has ten state regions. We dissolve the ADM2 counties into ten states plus two administrative areas: Pibor and Pochalla counties form Greater Pibor; Pariang and Abiemnhom form Ruweng. The remaining counties retain their source state groupings. Abyei Region is excluded, and is not assigned to either country. Shared edges are simplified together at 0.002 degrees using Shapely coverage_simplify; no control lines are inferred. The retained map-source geometry and outline are the offline build inputs. County aggregation is a geographic reference, not a claim about current control. Administrative framework: https://nec.gov.ss/press-statement-of-the-chairperson-of-the-national-elections-commission-of-the-republic-of-south-sudan/ Abyei: https://unisfa.unmissions.org/en/factsheet Rivers: Natural Earth 1:10m rivers and lake centerlines, public domain. https://github.com/nvkelso/natural-earth-vector/blob/master/geojson/ne_10m_rivers_lake_centerlines.geojson https://www.naturalearthdata.com/about/terms-of-use/ Retained full named courses are never clipped to the national outline or opening camera. White Nile combines Natural Earth river IDs 9 (Albert Nile), 14 and 16 (Bahr el Jebel), and 17 (El Bahr el Abyad), from Lake Albert to Khartoum. More distant headwaters and the main Nile below Khartoum have different names and are not relabelled as White Nile. Sobat is the lower part of ID 607, downstream of the Baro–Pibor junction. Natural Earth labels the lower Pibor as Sobat too: that southern part of ID 607 is assigned to Pibor with ID 1129, ending at the junction near 8.438N. Kangen is ID 1048; Akobo is ID 452 and continues into Ethiopia; Bahr el Zeraf is ID 355. Small source gaps between adjacent reaches are connected below 0.04 degrees. Generalised centre lines do not depict every channel, seasonal flow or navigable route. The Sudd is a sight and reading topic, not a fixed-shoreline lake answer. Bahr el Ghazal is discussed in the reading; this selection does not claim to inventory every South Sudanese river. Settlement coordinates are curated approximate centres, longitude/latitude. Sight pins are representative educational points, not routes or entrances. Sudd and Deim Zubeir coordinates follow UNESCO submissions. Boma and Badingilo are representative locations within a single World Heritage property. Options are written in parallel forms, with comparable character lengths. Correct positions are evenly spread (20 each). Corrections apply to existing original prompts; no database reseed or migration is required. The quiz is a learning activity, not a citizenship exam. No dedicated local-language lesson course is claimed. PHOTOGRAPHS Ten existing, distinct local photographs retain source links, authors and licence labels in src/lib/african-facts-heroes.json and the guide content. The White Nile photograph is reused as the banner. Photographs record past views; the politics photograph specifically records the 2011 referendum.
