Somalia country guide — sources and limitations Prepared 26 October 2026. Map scope The retained outline is the SO feature of Worldly’s public/countries.geojson, a generalised Natural Earth-derived map with site-specific country entries. Worldly displays Somaliland as XS separately. This is a display convention, not a decision on recognition, territorial claims or current military control. The outline is not an administrative boundary dataset. In particular, its northeastern and Somaliland edges are not reliable political boundaries. Do not use it for navigation, legal boundaries or operational planning. Natural Earth data are public domain: https://www.naturalearthdata.com/about/terms-of-use/ Retained source: scripts/somalia-outline-source.geojson. Rebuild offline: node scripts/build-somalia-map.mjs. Twelve curated city centres use longitude, latitude in WGS84. Names use common English spellings, with Somali forms in notes. Approximate centres were checked against the corresponding Wikipedia settlement articles. Kismayo’s true centre falls about 1.3 km outside the generalised coastline and is retained rather than moved inland. Eight sight pins represent quarters, towns or landscapes, not entrances or open visitor facilities. Several Mogadishu pins are close together; zoom in to distinguish them. The maps show no provincial or control lines. This guide does not supply an itinerary or infer access from historic photos. Recheck the live advice for changes. Editorial decisions The history distinguishes the 26 June northern independence from the 1 July 1960 union; Punt’s location is debated. The politics text avoids current heads of government, a fixed future electoral system and military control lines. The reading distinguishes Somali (Cushitic) from Arabic (Semitic) and includes Maay, Chimwiini, coastal and Somali Bantu communities rather than presenting a uniform society. The language link teaches introductory general Somali. No citizenship exam is invented. Existing facts questions All eighty original seed questions are retained in a fixture. Twenty-six read-time corrections preserve IDs, stored lessons and learner progress. Corrections qualify Somaliland geography and Punt, remove the untouched-marine- ecosystem claim, correct the modern Mosque of Islamic Solidarity and Amud’s Awdal location, and replace unsupported social, dietary and wildlife generalisations. The presidential-election question is explicitly historical (2022). No database reseed or schema change is involved. Photography The guide reuses ten existing locally served photographs and their licences. These include historical classroom, book-fair, port, parliament and street scenes, not a record of current conditions. The banner reuses the credited Jazeera Beach photograph, so it does not add an unlicensed image or external image dependency. geography: Jazeera Beach near Mogadishu, Somalia /images/facts-africa/so/geography.jpg FaarisAdam, CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Xeebta_Jasiira.jpg history: The ruins of Mogadishu Cathedral, Somalia /images/facts-africa/so/history.jpg AMISOM Public Information, CC0, via Wikimedia Commons https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:2012_11_18_AMISOM_Mogadishu_Cathedral_F_(8199816654).jpg language: A classroom handover at Mujamac Primary School, Somalia /images/facts-africa/so/language.jpg AMISOM Public Information, CC0, via Wikimedia Commons https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:2015_03_04_AMISOM_Djiboutian_Renovate_Primary_School-1_(16552293340).jpg culture: The Mogadishu Book Fair, Somalia /images/facts-africa/so/culture.jpg USAID in Africa, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Somalia_Mogadishu_Book_Fair_2016_(29130833702).jpg economy: An aerial view of the port of Mogadishu, Somalia /images/facts-africa/so/economy.jpg TSGT PERRY HEIMER, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Aerial_view_of_the_port_of_Mogadishu.JPEG politics: The House of the People in Mogadishu, Somalia /images/facts-africa/so/politics.jpg Government of Somalia, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:House_of_the_People_Somalia_A.jpg nature: The Juba River near Jamaame, Somalia /images/facts-africa/so/nature.jpg Sylvie Doutriaux, CC BY-SA 2.0, via Wikimedia Commons https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Juba_river_downstream_Jamaame.jpg food: A fishmonger at Mogadishu’s fish market, Somalia /images/facts-africa/so/food.jpg AMISOM Public Information, CC0, via Wikimedia Commons https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:2016_04_Eid_Preparations-4_(28083944185).jpg landmarks: Isbahaysiga Mosque in Mogadishu, Somalia /images/facts-africa/so/landmarks.jpg Omar Gadood, CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Isbahaysiga_Mosque_08.jpg people: The fishing harbour at Liido Beach in Mogadishu, Somalia /images/facts-africa/so/people.jpg AMISOM Public Information, CC0, via Wikimedia Commons https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Liido_Beach_Muqdisho_Daily_Life.jpg Settlement coordinate references checked 26 October 2026: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mogadishu https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kismayo https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baidoa https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beledweyne https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dusamareb https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galkayo https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Garoowe https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bosaso https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Qardho https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hafun https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Merca https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barawa https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arba%27a_Rukun_Mosque https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mosque_of_Islamic_Solidarity https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amud
