SLOVAKIA COUNTRY GUIDE — REFERENCES AND MAP NOTES Reviewed 20 October 2026. Public route: /atlas/slovakia POPULATION, INSTITUTIONS AND CURRENCY European Union country profile: https://european-union.europa.eu/principles-countries-history/eu-countries/slovakia_en The profile reports 5,409,407 residents using Eurostat's 2026 figures and an area of 49,035 square kilometres. The population is explicitly dated; it is not a count of the worldwide diaspora. EU accession: 1 May 2004. Euro adoption: 1 January 2009. Schengen accession: 21 December 2007. Euro adoption did not make Slovakia the first former communist country to use the euro; Slovenia adopted it in 2007. National Council of the Slovak Republic: https://www.nrsr.sk/web/Default.aspx?sid=nrsr/poslanie https://www.prezident.sk/en/page/constitution/ The National Council has 150 members elected for four-year terms. The directly elected president serves a five-year term and has constitutional powers. The prime minister leads the government. Eight self-governing regions are different from the two learning groups used on this guide's city map. NATO membership and the 2004 enlargement: https://www.nato.int/cps/en/natohq/topics_52044.htm Slovakia joined NATO on 29 March 2004. They are a separate inscription from the Wooden Tserkvas of Poland and Ukraine. Dobšiná Ice Cave is in Slovak Paradise and was added to the transboundary cave property in 2000; the shared inscription does not place it geographically inside the Slovak Karst. The tajchy reservoirs supported mining around Banská Štiavnica; this guide makes no claim that they were the world's first artificial reservoir system. CULTURE AND FOOD https://ich.unesco.org/en/RL/fujara-and-its-music-00099 https://ich.unesco.org/en/RL/puppetry-in-slovakia-and-czechia-01202 https://slovakia.travel/en/slovak-gastronomy https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C4%8Ci%C4%8Dmany Fujara music and puppetry are intangible cultural heritage. Čičmany's painted timber houses are not presented as either a World Heritage property or a standalone UNESCO intangible inscription. Bryndzové halušky are potato dumplings with sheep cheese, often with fried bacon. Lokše are potato flatbreads, slivovica is a plum spirit and medovina is fermented honey wine. PEOPLE https://www.warhol.org/andy-warhols-life/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Sagan https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milan_Rastislav_%C5%A0tef%C3%A1nik Andy Warhol was born in Pittsburgh to Rusyn parents from Miková in present-day Slovakia. Peter Sagan won the men's road-race world championship in 2015, 2016 and 2017: three consecutive titles, distinct from seven Tour de France green jerseys. Census ethnicity counts and estimates of Roma populations use different methods and are not interchangeable. MAP DATA AND LEARNING GROUPS public/slovakia-land.geojson extracts the SK feature from the repository's public/countries.geojson, a generalised Natural Earth outline (public domain): https://www.naturalearthdata.com/about/terms-of-use/ Rebuild the outline, city points, atlas pack and name lookup with: node scripts/build-slovakia-map.mjs scripts/slovakia-map-places.json retains sixteen authored clues and approximate settlement-centre coordinates. These are settlement pins, not municipal centroids or administrative boundaries. Locations can be cross-checked against the named city articles: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bratislava https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trnava https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nitra https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tren%C4%8D%C3%ADn https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C5%BDilina https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martin,_Slovakia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pie%C5%A1%C5%A5any https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kom%C3%A1rno https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bansk%C3%A1_Bystrica https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zvolen https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bansk%C3%A1_%C5%A0tiavnica https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poprad https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Levo%C4%8Da https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ko%C5%A1ice https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pre%C5%A1ov https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bardejov West and northwest, and Centre and east, are two eight-place learning groups. They do not replace the eight self-governing regions. No region-boundary or river game is claimed. The sixteen sights retain individual Wikipedia targets in src/lib/country-sights/slovakia.json. Essential and Worth a detour are editorial priorities. Village, mountain and cave pins represent places for learning, not confirmed entrances or routes. All city and sight pins are checked within a 3 km margin around the generalised country outline. PHOTOGRAPHS The banner and six topic photographs reuse credited local Slovak assets in public/images/speak/slovak and their metadata in src/lib/european-speak-heroes.json. They depict Bratislava Castle, the Belianske Tatras, Spiš Castle, Banská Štiavnica, Domica Cave, Bojnice Castle and St Elisabeth's Cathedral in Košice. QUIZ REVIEW All eighty seed questions were reviewed. Fifty-six original prompt keys receive corrections through the existing reviewedCountryContent layer. Corrections fix wrong answers, ambiguous geography, the false first-former-communist-euro claim, confusion between Slovak and Czech, mistaken UNESCO inscriptions, bridge functions and Sagan's title count. Changing political characterisations and unsupported numerical rankings are replaced by institutional or geographic questions. Corrected records have appropriate Wikipedia targets. Existing lesson IDs and saved progress are preserved; no seed scripts or database rows are modified.
