North Macedonia country guide — editorial and map references Prepared 20 October 2026. Route: https://worldly.academy/atlas/north-macedonia Population and communities State Statistical Office, Census 2021, first dataset (30 March 2022): https://www.stat.gov.mk/PrikaziSoopstenie_en.aspx?rbrtxt=146& Resident population: 1,836,713. Total enumerated including non-residents: 2,097,319. The guide uses the resident count and dates it explicitly. 24.30% of residents identified as ethnic Albanian; ethnicity and mother tongue are separate census variables. The census includes an administrative-data group without declarations of ethnicity; these percentages describe published totals. Institutions, languages and modern history Constitution and amendments, Assembly of the Republic of North Macedonia: https://www.sobranie.mk/the-constitution-of-the-republic-of-macedonia.nspx Macedonian is official throughout the territory and in international relations. The twenty-percent language provision and legislation govern Albanian official use; this is not a claim that every minority language has identical legal use. European Commission, country accession timeline: https://enlargement.ec.europa.eu/enlargement-policy/north-macedonia_en Application 2004, candidate status 2005, first accession IGC July 2022. NATO, relations with North Macedonia: https://www.nato.int/cps/en/natohq/topics_48830.htm Accession on 27 March 2020; the Prespa settlement preceded accession. Prespa Agreement signed 2018; constitutional name took effect in 2019. Macedonian standard: official status in 1944, alphabet and orthography in 1945. https://www.britannica.com/topic/Macedonian-language Serbian Orthodox Church, institutional reference for the 2022 recognition of Macedonian Orthodox Church–Ohrid Archbishopric autocephaly: https://spc.rs/en/ The 1967 declaration and recognition in 2022 are different events. Recognition by one church does not claim that every question among all Orthodox churches has been settled. Heritage, nature and local places UNESCO, Natural and Cultural Heritage of the Ohrid region, property 99: https://whc.unesco.org/en/list/99/ The transboundary property includes natural and cultural heritage, not just Ohrid old town or a single church. Lake Ohrid is shared with Albania; Great Prespa with Albania and Greece; Dojran with Greece. UNESCO tentative-list entry, archaeological site of Kokino: https://whc.unesco.org/en/tentativelists/5413/ Bronze Age context. Astronomical interpretations are identified as such; the guide does not repeat a worldwide observatory ranking or a 3800 BCE date. The four parks are Mavrovo, Pelister, Galičica and Šar Mountain. Economy and currency: https://www.worldbank.org/en/country/northmacedonia/overview https://www.nbrm.mk/ https://www.wto.org/english/thewto_e/countries_e/macedonia_e.htm Avoid volatile sector percentages, export-destination rankings and grape-area superlatives. Services, manufacturing and agriculture are distinguished. Map method The country outline reuses the repository's generalised Natural Earth MK feature from public/countries.geojson. It is a learning reference, not a survey. City coordinates are curated approximate settlement centres, separate from municipal boundaries. Sixteen cities form two complete eight-question rounds. Western valleys/lakes and capital/centre/east are learning groups, not official regions. City and sight positions are validated against a 3 km buffered outline. Sights include eight Essential and eight Worth a detour learning priorities. Landscape points are representative locations, not trailheads or access advice. Coordinate order in GeoJSON is longitude, latitude. Photographs Eleven existing local photographs are reused: the Bitola clock-tower hero and ten topic photographs from the Macedonian language collection. Each retains its subject-specific alt text, original Wikimedia Commons file link, author and licence. The manifests are src/lib/european-speak-heroes.json and src/lib/speak-challenge-heroes.json. A contact-sheet review checked the subjects. No new photograph was downloaded and no credit was removed. Quiz review All 80 seed questions in the MK entry of seed-europe-batch5c.mjs were reviewed. Forty original prompt keys receive read-time corrections, covering ambiguous lakes and sea answers; Šar/Korab geography; Slavic script attribution; alphabet dates; language percentages; Kokino; economy; EU/NATO milestones; lynx range; food variants; fresco location; Stone Bridge dating; population scope; Pero Antić's sport; and church recognition. Original lookup prompts, question IDs, seed literals and database content remain intact. These corrections apply through the existing shared reviewedCountryContent function.
