Honduras country guide — reading and map sources Reviewed 23 October 2026 READING The ten illustrated topics and 30 explanatory answers share their reading with the Honduras facts course. The linked lessons teach general everyday Spanish. Geography, regional context and history: https://www.britannica.com/place/Honduras https://www.britannica.com/place/Honduras/History Britannica gives Mount Las Minas as 2,849 m; this guide rounds to about 2,850 m. The summit is also known as Celaque. Elevation figures vary between references. Maya Site of Copán, inscriptions and archaeological heritage: https://whc.unesco.org/en/list/129/ Río Plátano Biosphere Reserve, communities and natural heritage: https://whc.unesco.org/en/list/196/ Garífuna language, dance and music; shared four-country inscription: https://ich.unesco.org/en/RL/language-dance-and-music-of-the-garifuna-00001 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Languages_of_Honduras Spanish is official; Indigenous, Garífuna and island linguistic traditions are distinct. Living Lenca identity is not equivalent to fluent use of an ancestral Lenca language. The guide avoids undated demographic percentages. Economy, remittances, opportunity and climate vulnerability: https://www.worldbank.org/en/country/honduras/overview Constitution, including article 8 naming Tegucigalpa and Comayagüela jointly: https://www.constituteproject.org/constitution/Honduras_2013 The guide does not infer current officeholders or re-election rules from this historical constitutional text. Food and regional dishes: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honduran_cuisine https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Machuca Berta Cáceres, the 2015 prize and her murder in 2016: https://www.goldmanprize.org/recipient/berta-caceres/ QUIZ REVIEW 33 read-time corrections preserve existing lesson/question IDs and progress. UNESCO records Copán's inscription in 1980, rather than 1985. The stairway is commonly described as having 63 steps. Cerro Las Minas and Celaque must not be separate answer options for the highest summit. The guide avoids an exclusive claim about Honduras's two coasts and does not call Yojoa its only natural lake. Garífuna is Arawakan; the UNESCO Representative List inscription is dated 2008, distinct from the 2001 proclamation. A celebration question that mixed Belize and Honduran contexts is replaced with Caribbean community geography. Other corrections remove unsupported rankings and undated socioeconomic estimates. CAFTA-DR was signed in 2004; entry into force is a different event: https://ustr.gov/trade-agreements/free-trade-agreements/cafta-dr-dominican-republic-central-america-fta Copán and the Hieroglyphic Stairway: https://whc.unesco.org/en/list/129/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cop%C3%A1n PHOTOGRAPHS Ten existing local photographs in /images/facts-north-america/hn/ are reused. Each topic and the banner retain the photographer, licence and Commons source link recorded in src/lib/north-american-facts-heroes.json. The Roatán beach photo serves as the banner. Its map pin indicates Roatán generally, not a verified camera position. No newly generated or uncredited photographs. MAP GEOMETRY — NATURAL EARTH (PUBLIC DOMAIN) Natural Earth 1:10m admin-1 boundaries provide all 18 departments. The Bay Islands department includes Roatán, Utila, Guanaja and offshore cays, including the Swan Islands in the northern part of the frame. Original ISO letter codes are retained. Names are normalised in the builder. The same dataset supplies the neighbouring land mask used to clip the two marine learning areas. Ulúa (labelled "Ula" in Natural Earth) and Coco river lines come from the 1:10m rivers and lake centerlines dataset. River targets are clipped to a small buffer around Honduran land so the Coco retains its shared border course. https://www.naturalearthdata.com/about/terms-of-use/ https://raw.githubusercontent.com/nvkelso/natural-earth-vector/master/geojson/ne_10m_admin_1_states_provinces.geojson https://raw.githubusercontent.com/nvkelso/natural-earth-vector/master/geojson/ne_10m_rivers_lake_centerlines.geojson Source snapshots: scripts/honduras-admin-source.geojson and scripts/honduras-context-land-source.geojson, plus the Natural Earth entries in scripts/honduras-water-source.geojson. Lake Yojoa, Caratasca Lagoon, the Aguán and Patuca use OpenStreetMap geometry retrieved through the Overpass API on 23 October 2026. Lake/lagoon outer and inner rings were assembled into polygons. River relations use main_stream members; Patuca side_stream members are excluded. Geometry is simplified to 0.0001 degrees in the source snapshot. https://www.openstreetmap.org/relation/16206917 — Lake Yojoa https://www.openstreetmap.org/relation/5920724 — Caratasca Lagoon https://www.openstreetmap.org/relation/5920726 — Aguán River https://www.openstreetmap.org/relation/5920738 — Patuca River https://www.openstreetmap.org/copyright https://opendatacommons.org/licenses/odbl/1-0/ These OSM-derived geometries are made available under ODbL 1.0, including their entries in scripts/honduras-water-source.geojson and the derivative features in public/honduras-waters.geojson. Other features retain the source terms stated above. Download the public map at /honduras-waters.geojson. The source snapshot and reproducible builder are committed alongside the map in the repository. CITY PINS AND MARINE LEARNING AREAS 22 curated settlement centres cover all 18 departmental capitals plus Copán Ruinas, Tela, Puerto Cortés and Utila. These are town/city pins rather than municipality boundaries. Roatán (Coxen Hole) identifies the departmental capital, not the entire island. La Esperanza is distinct from adjacent Intibucá. The Gulf of Fonseca and Caribbean Sea are curated, generalised learning areas, clipped away from land. They do not represent maritime boundaries, navigation charts, island-sovereignty claims, or current coastlines and water levels. Caratasca Lagoon is removed from the Caribbean answer area to avoid competing answers. Caratasca is a coastal lagoon; the game's internal lake category groups lakes and lagoons. Rivers use main-channel reference geometry, not flood extents. OFFLINE REPRODUCTION With Python and Shapely 2 installed: python3 scripts/build-honduras-maps.py The three source snapshots reproduce the public department, city and water maps, the atlas pack and the place-name registry. No network or database access needed.
