Ethiopia country guide map sources — prepared 18 October 2026 Administrative areas CSA (Central Statistics Agency) and regional Bureaus of Finance and Economic Development (BoFED), configured and published by OCHA FIS and HDX. Ethiopia COD-AB version 04; source boundaries created August 2023, valid from 1 January 2025, edited November 2025, reviewed December 2025. Downloaded today. https://data.humdata.org/dataset/cod-ab-eth https://data.humdata.org/dataset/cb58fa1f-687d-4cac-81a7-655ab1efb2d0/resource/0518da1b-42d1-4624-ad64-768cb69f9d40/download/eth_admin_boundaries.geojson.zip Licence: Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Intergovernmental Organisations https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/igo/ The source has 15 ADM1 features: 12 regional states, the Addis Ababa and Dire Dawa city administrations and a separately designated Contested area (ET99). The exercise preserves all of them, with original OCHA p-codes, geometry and shared edges. It does not label the contested area a regional state, assign it to another region or interpret its shape as current military control. The newer southern regions are included; the former SNNPR is not a target. Public properties are reduced to code, name and kind; coordinates are retained. The source contains generalised boundaries and local caveats: at ADM3 two contested woreda units are not represented geometrically. The guide does not invent geometry for them or claim to map every administrative level. Required source disclaimer: The boundaries and names shown and the designations used on this data do not imply official endorsement or acceptance by the United Nations. Reference to “contested areas” is understood within the context of the Pretoria Agreement (Article 10, 2022). Waters Natural Earth 1:10m, version 5.1.2. Public domain. https://www.naturalearthdata.com/about/terms-of-use/ https://github.com/nvkelso/natural-earth-vector/tree/v5.1.2/geojson Layers: ne_10m_lakes, ne_10m_rivers_lake_centerlines. Selected source features are checked in as scripts/ethiopia-water-source.geojson. The Blue Nile target merges the three Abay features, selected Ethiopian reaches rather than its entire course into Sudan. Awash and Omo source segments are retained. Lake Turkana is shared with Kenya and is retained in full. Tana, Abaya, Chamo and Koka Reservoir complete the eight-water exercise. The older water dataset does not show the current GERD reservoir, water levels, every channel, current shores or safe navigation. The guide does not ask for GERD reservoir geometry. Coordinates are retained without additional simplification. A single river part uses a LineString wrapper; multiple parts use MultiLineString. Cities and sights Twenty-four curated city-centre coordinates are stored in public/data/ethiopia-map-places.json. They are representative learning pins. Sights use Wikipedia coordinate cross-checks, UNESCO reference coordinates for Gedeo, Lower Awash, Lower Omo and Bale, and curated representative locations for Melka Kunture, Zege Peninsula and Sof Omar. The Aksum pin marks the stelae area, Harar the Jugol, and Konso the Karati area. Serial properties and large natural or cultural landscapes cannot be represented by one point in their entirety. The pins are not entrances, routes, opening confirmations or safety assessments. https://whc.unesco.org/en/statesparties/et/ https://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php Rebuild: node scripts/build-ethiopia-maps.mjs No network access is required for the rebuild.
