EL SALVADOR COUNTRY GUIDE — sources and map licences Prepared 25 October 2026. Route: /atlas/el-salvador MAP GEOMETRY Department boundaries: Natural Earth 1:10m Admin 1 States/Provinces distribution, retrieved 25 October 2026. All 14 Salvadoran departments retain their ISO 3166-2 letter suffixes. These are not the 44 municipalities created by the 2023 legislation and implemented in 2024. https://naturalearth.s3.amazonaws.com/10m_cultural/ne_10m_admin_1_states_provinces.zip https://www.naturalearthdata.com/about/terms-of-use/ Natural Earth data are public domain. Coast masks reuse the repository's Guatemala/Honduras Natural Earth land snapshots, merged and clipped to the guide frame. Lempa River: Natural Earth 1:10m Rivers + Lake Centerlines. https://naturalearth.s3.amazonaws.com/10m_physical/ne_10m_rivers_lake_centerlines.zip Lakes and reservoir: © OpenStreetMap contributors, ODbL 1.0, retrieved through Nominatim on 25 October 2026. Source geometry is included in the repository at scripts/el-salvador-water-source.geojson; derived map geometry is publicly available at /el-salvador-waters.geojson. All 14 departmental capitals and Suchitoto, Chalchuapa, La Libertad and Perquín are included. Coordinates are checked against department polygons. Santa Tecla is La Libertad department's capital; the coastal city has a separate pin. The Gulf of Fonseca and Pacific targets are curated teaching areas masked against land and separated from one another. They do not represent full ocean extents, maritime borders or judgements about disputed islands. Güija retains its whole cross-border shape. The Lempa target follows available reference geometry in El Salvador and beside its northern border, not its full upper watershed. It excludes the separately selectable Cerrón Grande reservoir. Small shoreline and seasonal differences are inevitable at this scale. REPRODUCIBILITY python3 scripts/build-el-salvador-maps.py (requires Shapely 2) rebuilds the three public GeoJSON files, atlas pack and place-name registry offline from three committed snapshots. No network or database access is needed.
