Cyprus country guide — editorial, image and map references Prepared 21 October 2026. Route: https://worldly.academy/atlas/cyprus Scope The guide covers the physical island, including northern Cyprus and land in the UK Sovereign Base Areas. No administrative, sovereignty or ceasefire-line boundaries are drawn by this pack. A single Nicosia pin represents the location of the divided city, without conflating the administrations on its two sides. The Republic's official languages, EU membership and currency are distinguished from the northern administration and the use of Turkish lira in the north. Its link is a current reference, not a claim that one nationality's entry rules apply to every reader. It discusses designated crossings, pedestrian-only crossings, consequences of arrival through the north, rental permissions and insurance for vehicles. The map is not a route planner or a statement that every site is accessible. The 1960 independence, 1964 peacekeeping mission, 1974 coup and invasion, 1983 declaration in the north, and 2004 referendums are separate events. The self-declared state in the north is recognised only by Türkiye. Map source and method Natural Earth 1:10m land polygons, public domain, pinned snapshot: https://raw.githubusercontent.com/nvkelso/natural-earth-vector/ca96624a56bd078437bca8184e78163e5039ad19/geojson/ne_10m_land.geojson https://www.naturalearthdata.com/about/terms-of-use/ The Cyprus island polygon was extracted without simplifying or changing its 202-point exterior ring. The retained feature carries the original source URL, licence and scope note. This is a generalised physical coastline, not a survey; it contains Akrotiri, Dhekelia and northern Cyprus as island land. It does not encode boundaries, crossings, military positions or offshore maritime claims. Sixteen curated settlement centres use longitude, latitude. Their authored clues and source coordinates are in scripts/cyprus-map-places.json; regenerate pins and names with node scripts/build-cyprus-map.mjs. Two eight-place informal learning groups are separate from any official administrative districts. All city and sight points fall inside a 750-metre margin around the generalised coastline. The margin accommodates shoreline simplification at coastal sights, including Paphos, Cape Greco and Kyrenia Harbour. Inland pins are also checked. Twenty sights include eight in the north: Kyrenia Harbour and Castle, Bellapais, Saint Hilarion, Famagusta old town, Salamis, Büyük Han, Kantara and Apostolos Andreas. Kourion stands in the western UK Sovereign Base Area. Wetland and peninsula pins identify representative locations, not gates or trailheads. Images Eleven existing local JPEGs are reused with subject-specific alt text and the original Wikimedia file-page, author and licence credits. The banner shows Kyrenia Harbour. Culture shows Büyük Han, politics the Ledra Street crossing, and landmarks Bellapais Abbey. Seven other topics use the Cyprus collection. Source manifest: src/lib/european-facts-heroes.json, CY and XC entries. A contact-sheet review checked that the subjects agree with their captions. Quiz corrections All eighty CY questions in seed-europe-batch5b.mjs were reviewed. Twenty-seven read-time corrections fix the Mediterranean island ranking answer, Nicosia's description, northern status, Hellenistic history, the 1974 coup, language and script simplifications, Neolithic culture, mosaic context, sector and resource claims, reunification talks, the 2004 referendums, Akamas, Cyprus cedar, food ambiguities, duplicate Aphrodite Rock answers, Makarios, invented biographical claims, population scope and constitutional communities. Renos Kyriacou's claimed EGOT and the false Zeno/Ptolemaic-adviser item are replaced with sound questions. The eighty original questions are retained in scripts/fixtures/cyprus-questions.json. Corrections apply through reviewedCountryContent, preserving lesson and question IDs, progress, the original seed and stored database content. No reseed or schema change is needed. Existing Greek and Turkish courses are linked unchanged.
